Will of Katherine Ofhoo of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), widow, made 12 January, 1483, bequething the greater part of her property to her daughter Agnes Polstade. Probate dated last day of February, 1493.

Statement by an abbot respecting the original appointment and duties of the steward of the franchises and liberties of the abbot of Bury St. Edmund, with complaint of neglect and of wrongs suffered thereby, (one word illegible) bailiff and sub-bailiff almost beaten to death at Sudbury, others taken from Chevington and imprisoned at Bury St Edmunds (Bury), etc. [Temp. Indenture made 23 March, 7 Hen. VII (1492), witnesseth that Robert Crane hath delivered to Thomas, the abbot of Bury St. Edmund, collector of the benevolence granted to the king in the shire of Suffolk towards his voyage royal into France, £212 16s. 4d. collected within the hundred of Babergh Hundred (Babergh).

Will of William Bataly of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), dated 20 October, 1500. Probate dated the Tuesday on the feast of St. Wulstan, bp., 1500.

HESSETT. Indenture witnessing that William, the abbot of Bury Seynt Edmund, and the convent of the same have demised to Thomas Bakon of Hessett (Heggesset) their manor of Hessett (Heggesset) pertaining to the office of the "tresory" of their monastery, for 20 years, at an annual rent of £8. Dated 12 Sept., 19 Hen. VII (1503).

Indenture by which William, the abbot, and the convent of Bury St. Edmund have demised to Thomas Bakon of Hessett (Heggesset) their manor of Hessett (Heggesset), for 20 years, paying annually to the treasurer of the monastery £8. Dated 12 September, 19 Hen. VII (1503). [Marked 138* on the charter but there is no 138.]

An acquittance dated 4 March, 1 Henry VIII (1510), given by sir John Gye, cellarer of the abbey of Bury St. Edmund, to George Plesaunce, for all manner of reckonings between them before Mich. last.

Indenture made 6 Nov., 28 Hen. VIII (1536), by which John, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, demises to Thomas Andrew and Thomas Reve the manor of Ingham (Ingham, called Ingham Hall), beloning to the office of cellarer, excepting the advowson, for 60 years, at an annual rent of £39. A bond from the lessees in 200 marks is attached.

Indenture made 31 January, 34 Hen. VIII (1543), by which John Swanton and Robert Sharpe, supervisors of the lands and tenements of late Margaret Odeham of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), with the assent of the alderman and brethren of the guild of the Purification of our Lady, have demised to Thomas Creme, brewer a piece of land in Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid in the field called Westgatefeld for 20 years, at an annual rent of 3s. 4d.

Indenture made 1 June, 35 Hen. VIII (1543), by which Robard Sharpe, and John Swanton, supervisors of lands &c. of late Margaret Odeliam, now belonging to the guild of the Purification of our B. Lady, demise to Nicholas Avies, the elder, roughmason, four pieces of arable land containing by estimation 16 acres in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), for 21 years, at an annual rent of 20s, with consent of the alderman Dye and brethren of the gild.

Indenture made 1 July, 35 Hen. VIII (1543), by which Robert Sharpe, tallowchandler of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), and John Swanton, brewer, keepers of the lands and tenements of Candlemas Guild, demise to Thomas Lacy of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) a messuage in the Marketsted of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, for 20 years, at an annual rent of 33s. 4d.

Indenture made 17 April, 1 Ed. VI (1547), by which Robard Sharpe and Nicolas Avys the elder, supervisors of the lands and tenements given to the town of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) by Margaret Odam, gentylwoman, according to the will of the said Margaret, have demised to William Parke of Bury St Edmunds (Bury), mercer, a shop without a 'soeler' in the Fyshmarket for 21 years, at an annual rent of 8s.

Indenture made 1 Oct., 4 Ed. VI (1550), by which Thomas Browse and Edmond Hawkyn, supervisors of the purchasyd town lands, demise to John Jelly one tanner's stall in the Marketsted in Bury St Edmunds (Bury) for 21 years, at an annual rent of 2s.

Indenture made 3 Feb., 35 Hen. VIII (1544), by which Robert Sharppe and John Swanton, supervisors of the lands late Margaret Odam's, now belonging to the guild of the Purification of S. Mary V. demise unto Roger Barbor 27 acres of land in Bury St Edmunds (Bury), Westley (Westeley) and Horringer (Moche Hornyngferth) for 20 years, at an annual rent of 25s. 8d.

Indenture dated 7 Aug. 2 and 3 Philip and Mary, by which Roger Barbour and William Parke of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), mercer demyse and grant to Edmund Hawkyns, grocer a close containing 7 a. 3 r. 18p. in Westgatefelde of Bury St Edmunds (Bury), for 21 years, at an annual rent of 24s.

Indenture made 24 Nov., 9 Elizabeth, by which Thomas Buttery of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), yeoman sells to John Nycholysson, for 100 pounds, two pieces of arable land lying in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, containing 11 acres.

Grant by Q. Elizabeth to sir Nicholas Bacon of certain stock "or stawre" of the manor of Mildenhall (Mildenhale), co. Suffolk, formerly demised by the abbot and convent of Bury St. Edmund to Robert Clerk, the said Nicholas paying to the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster , to which the manor of Mildenhall (Mildenhale) is lately annexed, £54 10s. 4d. Dated 24 Nov., 3 Elizabeth (1560).

Indenture made 15 May, 34 Elizabeth 1592, by which Christopher Baker of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), scrivener demises to farm to Gregory Bridon, "bower", a messuage in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) for 21 years, at an annual rent of 1d.

Indenture made 24 December, 45 Q. Elizabeth, 1602 by which Gilbert Spalding of Hawstead (Hawsted, in the county of Suffolk), sells to Thomas Cooke, tailor a messuage &c. in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), next Risbygate in consideration of a sum of £39 paid to the said Gilbert.

Recognizance entered into by Elizabeth Milward of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) on her being allowed to keep an alehouse in that town. Dated 24 January, 1 James I (1604).

Indenture to save harmless Richard Gippes and Robert Martyn in any action or suits by virtue of their patent or warrant. Given by the alderman and burgesses of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), whose names are signed on the back. Dated 12 May, 1625.

The will of Edward Gatewade of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), clothier, dated 7 Charles I. Probate dated 2 Dec., 31 October, 1631.

Indenture made 6 October, 24 Charles I (1648), by which Myles Burgh, gent., alderman and keeper of the gaol of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), acknowledges to have received of John Clarke, late keeper, 21 prisoners for debt etc. as described in a schedule annexed.

Indenture made 30 May, 1657, by which Edward Freeman of Wymondham (Wymondham, Norfolk), husbandman, in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds, demises to Joseph Alexander of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), apothecary, in Guildhall street, a messuage in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) for 30 years, at an annual rent of a pepper corn.

Indenture made 14 April, 21 Charles II (1680), by which James, earl of Suffolk, steward of the franchises of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), appoints Jonathan Perry of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), gent. his deputy steward of the said franchises during the will and pleasure of the said earl.
