Anselm, the abbot of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), grants to Leo and his heirs one toft in the town of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), which Holdoger bought of the widow Godgiva and left at his death to Anselm, the land belonging to Hernegrida, etc., and land at Westley of the hall of Fornham (Fornhame) paying annually 4s. to the provost of Fornham (Fornhem); land formerly wood at Chevington (Ceventune). [Anselm, abbot, 1121-48.] [A remarkably fine, perfect and long charter, with many particulars omitted above.] Witnessed, Talebot the prior with all the convent, and 35 others!

HENGRAVE. Anselm, the abbot of St. Edmund, grants to Leo and his heirs the manor of Hengrave (Hemegrede) in fee and heirship, to hold of the altar of St. Edmund and of the sacristan, to pay on the altar each year at stated times 100s., &c. (c. 1130-40.)

NEDHAM. Roger de Bevilers, son of Warren de Bevilers, grants to the hospital of St. Peter without the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in frankalmoigne, two acres of arable land, less one rood, lying in the field of Needham Market (Nedham). (c. 1180-90.)

HENGRAVE, &c. Chirograph by which Hugh, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund grant and confirm to William, son of Leo, and his heirs after him, the manor of Hengrave (Hemmegredhe); also the whole of the land which his father Leo held in Westley (Westleia) of the hall of Fornham, and land in Cheventona of the hall of Chevington (Cheventona), and land which he held in the Saxhams (Sexham) of the hall of Great Saxham or Little Saxham (Sexham), &c.; paying 110s. for Hengrave (Hemmegredhe), 4s. at the hall of Fornaham for Westleia, 3s. at the hall of Cheventona for Cheventona, and 12d. at the hall of Sexham. HOPETONE, CUNGESTON, and BARTON. Hugh, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, grant to Vital and his heirs all the tenures and gifts which abbot O[rding] gave to him, viz. land in Hopton (Hopeton) and Coney Weston (Cungeston), and in Great Barton (Bertune), also a toft in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), subject to certain services. [c. 1160-70.]

Sampson, the abbot of St. Edmund, grants to William Carbonel a certain liberty which is called Infongenethef in his village of Chilton, which is of the fee of Eye, at an annual rent of 1 lb of white incense. (c. 1190-1200)

REDGRAVE. Final concord made at Oxford the Monday next after the octave of the Purification B.V.M. next after Louis, king of France, came to England to St. Thomas, by which William Oligrant quit-claimed to the abbot of St. Edmund all right in 40 acres of land in Redgrave, for which the said abbot gave him 20s. (1180.)

CHELSWORTH. Samson, the abbot, and convent of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) grant to Benedict, son of Richard de Blacheham, to hold in fee and heirship at Timworth (Thymworde), the land which was Theodric's, saving the custom and right which was due to the abbot of St. Edmund from that land, and Chelsworth (Cherlesworde) in fee farm, paying each year two farms to the cellarer and the hal-farm which is called the farm of St. Edmund and to extreme farm ["ad extremam firmam"] of Horringer (Ornigheseord) 20s.; and Lackford (Lacheforde) in fee farm. Dated in full chapter, 1198.

Walter, son of Robert Alebald de Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) , grants to William, son of Huchtred de St. Edmund, for his fealty and service and 20s. of silver, one acre of arable land in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund). (c. 1190-1200.)

Geoffrey, son of William de Costentin, grants to John his brother the whole of his portion of the land and tenements which their father William held in the villages of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) and Rickinghall (Richingehale). (c. 1180-1190.)

FORNHAM. Richard, son of Anchisis of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) , quit-claims, in the hundred of Thingoe Hundred (Thinghoghe), for him and his heirs, to Thomas the goldsmith of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) and his heirs, the whole service of William, son of Alric of the monastery, viz. 3s. which was yearly due from him for the whole fee he held in the field towards Fornham, called Clipeshoghe. For this quit-claim the said Thomas gave 3 marks of silver and one gold coin ("aureum"). (c. 1190-1200.)

MILDENHALE, &c. Chirograph by which Samson, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund grant to Ralph de Colum their servant certain lands and rents in Mildenhall (Mildenhale). (1182-1211.) [Almost entirely effaced.] [Colum (see endorsement of Ch. Suffolk 26 where he is also a witness)]

Samson, the abbot of St. Edmund, grants to Henry, son of Thurstan, and his heirs, the mill called 'Salemundesforde,' with land and meadows customarily paying an annual rents of 27s., less 2d. to the abbot's hall at Fornham [All Saints]; to hold by free service, for the payment annually at the hall of Fornham of 30s.; also he grants eight acres at 'Hengrave (Hemegrethe)' at 2s., annual rent. (1184-1211.)

Wortham. John, son of Robert de Wurtham, quit-claims in full court, to Samson, the abbot of St. Edmund, and his successors, William and Wimer, sons of Elfwin de Wurtham, their chattels and service and with all that belongs to them, for 11 marks which Robert de Bosco gave to him in order that said Robert might hold them from the abbot; and for this quit-claim the abbot releases from an annual payment of 2d. [Fornham] Samson, the abbot of St. Edmund, grants to Ailmar, son of Ailward de Fornham, the mill which is called 'Ailmeres Heine' at a rent of 30s.; also a little meadow at the head of the mill-pond, [which mill used to pay an annual rent of 26s.] for which he is to render to the hall of Fornham the customary rent of seven ploughshares, with leave to have no ewer free from feldage, to hold the same by heirship. (1184-1211.)

Samson, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund confirm to Ralph, son of Lambert, certain land in fee in the village of Mildenhall (Mildenhale), which Ulfkoteke the priest held; by the service of 10s. annually. (c. 1190-1200.)

Samson, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund confirm to Nicholas de Geddinges 42 acres of arable land with one messuage and 4½ acres and half a rood of meadow in the village of Mildenhall (Mildenhale), which he held from year to year in the time of Richard de Clere, but now may hold in heirship at an annual rent of 12s. (c. 1190-1200.) [ Robert, prior, witness, d. in 1210]

BRADMERE. Convention between Samson, the abbot, and Geoffrey the clerk, of Mildenhall (Mildenhale), by which a messuage and certain lands lying in Bradmere are granted to the said Geoffrey. (c. 1190-1200.) Robert, prior, witness; died in 1200. [Partially obliterated.]

BRANDESTON. Walter de Ribof grants and confirms to the church of St. James of Dunwich and house of the lepers, and to Hubert, chaplain there, and his decessors, for the health of the soul of H. de Cressi and himself, &c., 40 acres of land in Brandeston (Brantest)', together with other lands, rents, tithes, &c. (c. 1190-1200)

Robert de Burnovill' grants to St. Felix, at Waletone and the monks there, his man Elfric Pipin with all his children, free of all service. For this donation the prior and monks gave to him 10s. (c. 1170-80.) Witn. Roger Bigod his lord.

WALTON, St. FELIX (Priory of). William de Burnevilla grants to the St. Felix and the monks there, his man Eluric Pipin with his children, free of all service except xvd., which Fulk the prior and his successors will give annually to the said William, to be paid by the monks until the death of one of them; and for this grant 20s. are paid. (c. 1160-70.) [Chirograph.]

CHILTON. Gilebert Karbunel grants to Geoffrey his brother the whole of his land of Chilton (Chiltune), with two men of Middleton (Middeltune) pertaining to the same land, for his service and homage and his money, viz. gold and silver, which he gave to him; with covenants for an exchange should the grantor marry and have a son, and deside to make an exchange. (c. 1170-80.)

Roger, son of William de Huntingefeld, grants to Gilebert Karbunel, Chilton (Chiltun) and Bures (Buras) and Wendeshale, by the service of one knight's fee, for which the said Gilebert gave 15 marks of silver and one war-horse of the price of 5 marks, and to Aeliza, wife of the said Roger, three bezants. Henry Mathew of Blundeston grants to Bartholomew (?) Clare certain land in Blundeston. Temp. Henry II. [Mutilated and almost entirely effaced.] .

LOUND. Alice de Lund, daughter of Ralph de Pesehale, grants to Robert, son of Edstan de Caldecotes (Caldecot near Fritton, Suffolk?), ten acres and half a rood of land in Lound (Lund) some near the way as you go from Lund to Rotepet towards the east, some in Kirkefurlong, some near the way going from the monastery of Lund in Boyton to the north, etc.; paying annually 12d., and giving now two bisants.
