⟨Bury St Edmunds.⟩ Basilia, wife of Alexander Brun of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) , quit-claims to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter without the gate of Risby (Rysseby), and Robert the warden those three roods of arable land which her husband granted to them in the field of Aylmerecroft. [c. 1270-75.]

Adam, son of Walter de Westle, grants in frankalmoigne to the hospital of St. Peter 9d. quit-rent from a toft with buildings in the suburb of St. Edmund without the gate of Ryseby. (c. 1260-70.) Witn. Geoffrey alderman, Richard de Pulham and Jocey de Walepole, bailiffs, Luke fitz-John etc.

Richard, son of Katherine of St. Edmund, grants to Robert, the prior, and the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter all right to 6d. annual rent which he was accustomed to take from the said brethren for one acre of arable land in Hamerlound. BARTON. Grant from Andrew son of Walter Bryen of Great Barton or Barton Mills (Bertone) to Adam son of Bartholomew the Miller of Great Barton or Barton Mills (Bertone) , for 3s. of a part of his messuage at Great Barton or Barton Mills (Bertone), paying yearly one penny. (c. 1240-50)

BARTON (Little). Robert Canewas grants to the church of St. Edmund and the monks there, in frankalmoigne, the whole of the water running between Mildenhall (Midehale) and Barton Mills (Bertune), with the fishery which belongs to him and the two lashers, viz. of Lodemuthe and Kemesingeford; for this donation the convent of St. Edmund gave to him one mark of silver in aid of his peregrination. (c. 1210-20.) Among the witnesses, Bartholomew provost of the Hundred.

Hugh, son of John of Rikighal, grants to John, the abbot of St. Edmund, one wind-mill in the village of Rickinghall Superior (Upper Rikinghale), with the site and land adjacent. For this charter of donation the said abbot gave to the said Hugh 20 marks and 2 pieces of land reckoned as 3 acres at Redgrave. (c. 1260-90.)

Convention made between Robert, the prior, and the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter without the gate of Risseby of the town of St. Edmund, of the one part, and Adam de Cokefeud of the other, by which the said prior and brethren demise one shop in the town of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in the way called Schapmannisrowe, for 10 years from Michaelmas 1 Ed. John de Brolkleye of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), baker, grants to the hospital of St. Peter 4s. of annual rent from his capital messuage situated in Wellestrete in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund). Convention dated on the vigil of St. Matthew, apostle, 6 Ed. [I] (20 Sept. 1278), between the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter of the one part, and Adam de Cokefeud, merchant, of the other, viz. that the said brethren grant to the said Adam, for his fealty and service and 4s. of silver, one shop in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the street called Chapmannisrowze, paying annually for the same 30 pence, to the heirs of Thomas de Backyrgges 30 pence, and to the bailiffs of the town one penny. Witn. Geoffrey son of Robert, alderman William son of Bartholomew and William de Walpole, bailiffs.

Gilbert de Derham grants to William de Newenham, almoner of the church of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), for 5 marks, one croft called Bertonecroft in Mildenhall (Mildenhale), to hold for 5 years from Mich. 8 Ed. I (1280). [See Ch. Suffolk 88.]

ERYSWELL. Agreement between Robert de Tudenham, kt., and John, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, made before the judges itinerant at Cattishall (Catteshel) 15 Ed. [I], by which upon certain conditions he renounces all claim and recognises the right of the abbot and convent of Bury to a view of frankpledge for the village of Eriswell (Eryswell).

John de Rammesdene of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) grants to Thomas, the abbot, and convent of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), in frankalmoigne, 2s. of annual rent from his messuage in 'le Eldemarketestede' of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), to be distributed among the monks "dies qua duplex sonittus in adventu Domine cum missarum sollempnitate celebratur". Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) the Friday next after the feast of St. Matthew, 33 Ed. I [24 Sept. 1305]. (Fine deed, written in large hand). Witnessed, Edmund son of Luke de St. Eadmund, William de Gypwic, and Laur. de Reda, bailiffs, etc.

Geoffrey, son of William de Tostoke, and Margaret his mother, widow grant to Stephen de Wrotham, for his fealty and service and 4 marks and 4s. of silver, which he gave them to eneble them to fulfil the will of the said William, two acres of arable land called Tuktys in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) lying towards the little mill, paying annually to the heirs of Peter Marescall two pence. (c. 1250-60.) Witn. John son of Luke alderman, Ralph de Anhus, and Thomas de Boeringe, bailiff.

PAKENHAM, BERTON, and ROUGHAM. Thomas, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund agree with sir Edmund de Pakenham concerning the rents of certain lands in Pakenham, Great Barton (Berton), and Rougham (Rughham). Dated ..., 1308. [Greater part effaced.]

Roger de Multon, parson of Chedburgh (Chetebere), remits and quit-claims to the hospital of St. Peter, all his right to six-pence annual rent from six acres of land in the fields of Westley (Westle). Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund)'s the Friday next after the feast of St. Michael, 4 Ed. II (2 Oct. 1310).

Gilbert de Neketone of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants to Ralph de Mildenhale 9s. of annual rent in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), from a shop situated in the street which is called 'La Rue Marchaunde.' Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Friday after the feast of the Nativity of St. John B., 4 Ed. II (25 June 1311). Witn. John de Ingham and John de Lyncoln, bailiffs, Thomas le Cornur, alderman.

Bartholomew, son of Augustine de Walsyngham, remits and quitclaims to Richard, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, all right in one messuage, lands, and tenements which were Augustine's, the father of the said Bartholomew, in the villages of Rickinghall Inferior (Lower Rikynghale), Wattisfield (Watlesfeld), and Hinderclay (Hildercle). Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), 21 June, 18 Ed. II (1325).

Richard Vileyn of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants and confirms to Thomas de Swanitone, keeper of the hospital of St. Peter without the gate of Rysby of St. Edmund, and the brethren there, 12d. of annual rent from a messuage in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the street called Scolehallestrete. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Monday next after the feast of St. Matthew, 18 Ed. II (24 Sept. 1324). Witn. Stephen de Ecclesia, alderman, John de Lincoln, bailiff etc.

William de Shellond of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants to sir Richard, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, in frankalmoigne, 6d. of annual quit-rent arising out of five acres of arable land in Fornham formely Ralph Kempe 's, for the use of the latter. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Monday next after the feast of the Invention of the Cross, 19 Ed. II (5 May 1326). Witn. Roger Baldwyne of Stowmarket (Stowemercat) grants to William de Bernigham of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) one messuage with edifices and appurtenances in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the merchants' street (Vicus mercatorum). Andrew Shurkyld of Northwold grants to William de Waketon, Geoffrey de Caverham and Alan Grene of Swanton, chaplains and brethren of the hospital of St. Peter one acre of land in the fields of the town of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) without the gate called Rysby gate. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Thursday next after the feast of the Epiphany, 14 Ed. III (12 Jan. 1341). Witn. [Richard] de Waltham and John de Honyngham, bailiffs etc.

William Maymond, master of the hospital of St. Nicholas of St. Edmund, and the brethren there, grant to Alan, son of Alan Grene of Swanton , one acre and one rood of land lying in the fields of the town ("villa") of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in a place called 'le Spynthelfeld', in exchange for an acre without the east gate. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Tuesday on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, 17 Ed. III (25 March 1343). Witn. John de Flemton, chaplain, grants to the abbot and convent of St. Edmund a messuage and 35 acres and a half of land in Fornham and Timworth (Tymworth) for the support of the office of chamberlain. Dated at Fornham All Saints, the Thursday on the morrow of St. Laurence [i.e. the archbishop, not the deacon], 29 Ed. III (4 Feb. 1355 (?, a Wednesday)).
