ICKLINGHAM. Indenture between king Henry VIII and George Rowse reciting an indenture dated 18 October, 30 Hen. VIII (1538), from the abbot and convent of Bury St. Edmund, of a lease of the manor of Icklingham with members (Iklyngham), co. Suffolk, for 60 years, at an annual rent of £24, which said lease is surrendered, and another, by the present indenture, granted for 21 years at the same rent. Dated 12 December, 31 Hen. VIII (1539). Icklingham (Ickingham). 1713. Copy of court roll. Surrender by Joseph Sharpe, gent., of 3 pieces of villein land (described) which he had had on surrender by his father Joseph Sharpe on 13 Oct. 1671, to use of Thomas Peirson, gent. and June, his wife, daughter of the Joseph (?), as in indenture between Joseph Sharpe of Retford(?) (and Jane, of same, spinster) and William Peirson of Middleton (Middleton, Norfolk), gent., and James Barker of Shropham, esq., Michael Colvile of Inner Temple, esq., Robert Purland of East Walton, clerk, Richard Baylis of London, (?) and Thomas Peirsin of Wisbech, gent. (son of William). Dated: Thursday 22 Oct., 12 Anne.

(a) Sampson, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund grant, in frankalmoigne, to the hospital of St. Saviour without the town of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), the place upon which the said hospital is built, also £12 of silver from their village of Icklingham (Ykelingham) and two portions of their church of Long Melford (Meleford), also two portions of the demesne tithes of Worlingworth (Wirlingwrd), Monk Soham (Saham), Tilneie, Elmswell (Elmeswell), Elveden (Elvedene), Herringswell (Heringwell), Newton (Neuton), Cockfield (Cokefeld), and in the same village of Cokefeld annually 8 acres of corn the third portion of the demesne tithes of Pakenham (Pakynham), Rungeton, Tivetshall St Margaret or Tivetshall St Mary (Tifteshall), Culford (Culeford), Horringer [previously Horningsheath] (Horningesherth) and Chelsworth (Chelisworth); also they grant all the tithes of their new assarts in the villages of Redgrave and Rickinghall (Rekinghalle), and a third portion of the tithe of the marsh of Tilneie, also their houses of Teleforh, saving to the monastery an annual service of 2s., and to the canons 12d. (b) Confirmation of the above grant by John, bp. of Norwich; giving the names of the rector of all the aforenamed churches. Dated at Norwich by the hands of David de Ruddebi, 17 Kl. August, 6th year of his episcopate. (c) Confirmation of the same by S., the prior, and convent of Norwich. (d) Confirmation of by archbishop Boniface of the same.
