As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised MS. Ch. Cambs. 1-66 and MS. Rolls Cambs. 1-11. The provenance of the documents, including some from the archives of Barnwell Priory and Ely Priory, was not recorded. MS. Ch. Cambs. 35 was part of the collection of Ralph Thoresby (for which see the collection overview for Yorkshire).

MSS. Ch. Cambs. 67-267 and MS. Rolls Cambs. 12 are later accessions. For the most substantial of these, Ch. Cambs. 72-146 (New College leases), see the collection overview for Berkshire. MS. Ch. Cambs. 147*-180* are seals without associated documents.
