SPENYTHORNE. Extract from the plea roll no. 1258, co. York, held at Westminster, Hilary term, 6 George II. The chancellor &c. of the University of Cambridge against sir Marmaduke Wyuill, bart., and Anthony Routh , concerning the right of presentation to the church of Spenythorne. [Mutilated.] .

A parchment book (bound in 1929), folios 1–11d., about 10½″ × 13″. f. 1. ‘Missus Gabriel de coelis’= Chevalier, Repertorium Hymnologicum no. 11636, which see for references to printed editions. This prose or sequence in honour of the Virgin Mary was in common use from the end of the twelfth century. f. 1. d. A rental of the lands assigned to the Chapel of S. Mary, between 1250–1288. It is here given in full because it provides a terminus ante quem for dating grants of land to the Chapel. ‘Memorandum quod anno domini 1250 in vigilia s. Mary in free alms 6d. rent in W⟨est⟩ H⟨addon⟩ , from a messuage lying between the prior of D⟨aventry⟩’s place on the north and that held by Geoffrey son of Susan from the prior on the south. Witnesses: Robert Waut ’, William South of Haddon , Thomas South of the same, Richard the clerk of the same, Richard of Holm of the same, John Herberd of the same. ⟨c. 1290–1310.⟩

Daventry, The Mills. Peter, prior, &c.; of D⟨aventry⟩ grant to John son of Roger Miller of D⟨aventry⟩ for his service, 2 acres of arable land in D⟨aventry⟩ and Drayton viz. in the south field of D⟨aventry⟩ 3 half acres lying at le Loch by the land of Simon de aula . In the south field of Drayton a half acre over Putforlong between the monks’ land and that of William of Drayton . Rent 2d. For this grant John gave the prior; &c., an acre of arable land ‘cum divisa eidem adiacente’ in the south field of Drayton over Ryenhul by the land of John Neel , on which acre Ryenhulmylne was situated, which acre and mill Roger, father of the said John, used to hold from the monks. Thrupp. Inspeximus and confirmation of the following documents by John, Bishop of Lincoln . 14 March 1311.

• (i) Richard, bishop of Lincoln grants the churches of Scaldeford, Bissebrok, and Southrop to D⟨aventry⟩ (The amount they paid for it is not legible.) Given at Bukkedene, 27 November 1266.
• (ii) Letters of the dean and chapter confirming (1). Given at Lincoln 21 April 1267.
• (iii) Letter of the bishop to the archdeacon of Northampton to give D⟨aventry⟩ corporal possession of the Church. Given at Leicester. 31 March 1286. (The Inspeximus tells us that this was on the death of Robert le Paumer, rector of Throp ). D⟨aventry⟩ instituted as their vicar, John of Daventry, chaplain: it was then found that the tithes were worth (1) of grain 15 marks a year (2) of hay from demesne meadows 8/- (3) of hay from other meadows, (4) of 2 virgates 2 acres pertaining to the Church, with pasture 32/-, (5) All other tithes 3½ marks. The monks are to bear two-thirds of all burdens on the Church, and the vicar one-third.
• (iv) Letters patent of Oliver, bishop of Lincoln to the archdeacon of Northampton to put John of D⟨aventry⟩ in possession. Given at Theyden. 4 May 1286.
• (v) Letters patent of the same (the same date) saying that at the instance of the monks he has written [as in (iv)] to the archdeacon. Given at Storne Park [Lincs.].

Oxford, St. Clement’s Thomas son of Adam of Huntingdon grants to St. F. a messuage and half an acre of land in Bruggesete. Witnesses: Thomas Seuy, John of Colshille, Robert de Wormenhale, John of Duklington, Andrew Kilward. ⟨1294–1316.⟩

Ardley [Oxon.]. William fitz-Gerard grants to Godfrey de Belefosse for his homage and service two crofts in Ardlega called Wdecrofte. Rent: 12d., scutage 3d. Witnesses: Ralph Martel , William Martel , Simon fitz-Mercian , John fitz-Ralph , Richard fitz-Gilbert , William the clerk , Arnold de Wica , William Malore , Roger de Belefosse , Warin de Belefosse , Stephen de Belefosse . ⟨c. 1200.⟩ Endorsed to the effect that William Frost of Ardleye now (8 R. Carlton.. Seventeenth century transcript of letters of William, abp. of York , endowing the chapel of Carleton which is assessed at 12 marks a year, with a vicarage house, small tithes, and one mark a year. Given at Cawode. ⟨30 June⟩1311.

Kildewyk.. Inspeximus by William, abp. of York , of a charter of John de Lund, prior of Boulton in Craven , assigning to the church of Kyldewyk all portions touching the vicarage except tithes of corn, wool, lambs, and of the mill, dated [9] Feb. 1376 [rectius 1276], and given at Otteley. Given at York. 18 March 1321. Preston.

Letters patent of Robert Johnson, bachelor of laws, official of the bishop of Worcester , stating that at the request of Richard Marshall, S.T.P., dean of Oxford , he caused the Worcester episcopal archives to be searched on 14 Jan. 1555, by Wm. Warmsey, notary public, who found: 4 ⟨July or August⟩ 1555.

• (i) Ordination of Silvester, bp. of Worcester , for the churches of Wotton and Preston-upon-Stour, appropriated to the abbey of Tewkesbury, assessing the church at £34, and providing for pensions from Wotton of 13/- to the bishop, 6/8 to the Dean and chapter, ¼ to the archdeacon, and from Preston 7/-, ¾, and ¼ respectively. Dated 15 April, 1555.
• (ii) License of Henry VII to Sir John Mordaunt, kt., William Grevill, sergeant-at-law, and Walter Rowdon , to grant the advowson of Wotton to Tewksbury. Dated 12 May (rectius 12 March), 1497.
• (iii) Letters patent of Maurice lord Berkeley, proclaiming the recovery of right against him in the advowson. Dated 7 July, 1504.
• (iv) Confirmation by the prior &c. of S. Mary’s, Worcester, 3 May, 1555.
