PORINGLAND (Little). Copy of the register of the chamberlain of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) of lands in West Poringland (Little Porynglond), with a charter of abbot Samson's grant to Roger de Gessynges. (Temp. Hen. VII.)

INGHAM. Lease from Thomas, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, and the convent of the same, to John and William Hegge de Ingham of their manor of Ingham and all that belongs to it, except the advowson of the church, for 70 years, paying annually to the cellarer of the monastery £16. Dated 10 Sept., 1 Richard III (1483). [Roughly altered as a draft for a lease from abbot John to John Playford and John Talbot for 20 years; dated 10 Sept. ... Henry VIII, year not filled in. Abbot John Reeve succeeded in 1514.]

Will of William Bataly of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), dated 20 October, 1500. Probate dated the Tuesday on the feast of St. Wulstan, bp., 1500.

HESSETT. Indenture witnessing that William, the abbot of Bury Seynt Edmund, and the convent of the same have demised to Thomas Bakon of Hessett (Heggesset) their manor of Hessett (Heggesset) pertaining to the office of the "tresory" of their monastery, for 20 years, at an annual rent of £8. Dated 12 Sept., 19 Hen. VII (1503).

Indenture by which William, the abbot, and the convent of Bury St. Edmund have demised to Thomas Bakon of Hessett (Heggesset) their manor of Hessett (Heggesset), for 20 years, paying annually to the treasurer of the monastery £8. Dated 12 September, 19 Hen. VII (1503). [Marked 138* on the charter but there is no 138.]

Thomas, son and heir of Thomas Purdy late of Redgrave , remits and quit-claims all his right in two messuages in the borough of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) in the street called Estgatestrete to Thomas Godard of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid. Dated 4 January, 20 Hen. VII (1505).

Thomas Parker of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), fishmonger, grants to Richard Frost, chaplain, one tenement, one parcel of a certain house, with a garden and parcel of land in Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid in the street called Whitingstrete. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), 8 March, 22 Hen. VII (1507).

An acquittance dated 4 March, 1 Henry VIII (1510), given by sir John Gye, cellarer of the abbey of Bury St. Edmund, to George Plesaunce, for all manner of reckonings between them before Mich. last.

MELFORD. At a court held at Long Melford (Melford) the Monday next after the feast of H. Trinity, 2 Hen. VIII (27 May 1510), the abbot of Bury St. Edmund admitted Roger Marten and Richard his son to one meadow at a rent of 7s. 1d.

Robert Worlyche of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), mason, Reginald Lerlynge, tiler, John Robynson, carpenter, and John Selond, smith, executors of John Busshe, mason, demise to Katherine Busshe, widow, Thomas Browne, chandler, and John Cracheroode, scrivener one messuage, a garden, and certain land in Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, in the street called 'Gyldehalstrete.' Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), 16 January, 10 Hen. VIII (1519).

Robert Stelyard, clerk, demises to Margery Draper of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), widow of John Batys and others a tenement in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) in the street called Chirchegatestrete, conveyed to him by the said Margery by deed dated 10 Sept. in the same year. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, 15 Sept., 13 Hen. VIII (1521).

Thomas Heryes, yeoman, Henry Tame, draper, Henry Gunse, and George Langham confirm to John Mower of Bury St Edmunds (Bury), thatcher, John Reche, thatcher, Richard Dowsyng, Thomas Mower, and William Halle one tenement situated in the vill of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), in the street called 'Overbaxterstrete.' Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, 16 October, 12 Hen. VIII (1520).

Thomas Heryes, Henry Tame, Henry Gunse, and George Langham grant to John Skitlard of Bury St Edmunds (Bury), labourer, John Arnolde, carpenter, Robert Sketlard, John Mower, and Thomas Mannyng one tenement in the village of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), in the street called 'Overbaxsterstrete' Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, 16 October, 12 Hen. VIII (1520).

Final concord made at Westminster on the morrow of [All] Souls, 18 Hen. VIII (1526), by which Nicholas Sywhat and Katherine his wife acknowledge the right of Robert Jamys, citizen and alderman of Norwich, Robert Germy, and William Wyburgh to six messuages, 2 barns, 2 gardens, 8 acres of pasture, and one acre of wood in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) and Nowton near Bury aforesaid.

John, the abbot, and the convent of Bury St. Edmund grant to Thomas Bacon of Hessett (Heggesset) with the consent of all their tenants, two acres and a half of pasture, part of the common of the manor of Hessett (Heggesset called Helgreve), with the consent of all their tenants, in exchange for 2½ acres of the said Thomas Bacon's lying in the same village. Dated 5 April, 24 Hen. VIII (1533).

HEPWORTH. Indenture witnessing that Robert Sutton of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), master of the chantry of John Smith, esq., at the altar of St. Mary, and seven others, demise to John Brimdissh, "cowper" and William his son a parcel of land with a house newly built thereon in the village of Hepworth, for 80 years, at an annual rent of 6d. Dated at Hepworth, 16 March, 24 Hen. VIII (1533).

Indenture made 6 Nov., 28 Hen. VIII (1536), by which John, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, demises to Thomas Andrew and Thomas Reve the manor of Ingham (Ingham, called Ingham Hall), beloning to the office of cellarer, excepting the advowson, for 60 years, at an annual rent of £39. A bond from the lessees in 200 marks is attached.

Christopher Lant, master of the hospital of St. Peter and house of the lepers, and brethren of the same appoint Edmund Hurste their proctor and special nuncio to ask and collect in their name throughout England alms and charity for the leprous of the hospital of St. Peter aforesaid. Dated 30 Hen. VIII. 7 April, 1539.

THEDWASTRE. Indenture dated 5 November, 30 Hen. VIII (1538), by which John, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund demise to John Freer of Wickham Skeith (Wychamsketh) their hundred of Thedwastre (Thedwastre), with the whole of their rents, &c., for 40 years, at an annual rent of £19 8s. 4d.

CULPHO. Letters patent of K. Henry VIII, dated 12 May, 32nd of his reign, granting to Thomas Bacon, esq., the manor of Hessett (Hessett, co. Suffolk), formerly belonging to the abbey of Bury St. Edmund, and the manor of Culpho, co. Suffolk, which belonged to the priory of Leyston, for £249 7s. 11d.

Indenture made 31 January, 34 Hen. VIII (1543), by which John Swanton and Robert Sharpe, supervisors of the lands and tenements of late Margaret Odeham of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), with the assent of the alderman and brethren of the guild of the Purification of our Lady, have demised to Thomas Creme, brewer a piece of land in Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid in the field called Westgatefeld for 20 years, at an annual rent of 3s. 4d.

Nicholas Sywhat, citizen and alderman of Norwich, grants to William Garton of Great Yarmouth (Great Jernemuthe) 4 messuages and one barn with edifices and appurtenances in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), of which one messuage and the barn called 'the moone' lie in the street called Netemarket, and another messuage in the street called 'Oldebaxterstrete,' and the two others in the street called Overbaxsterstrete alias Wellestrete, and he appoints William Rogers, citizen and alderman of Norwich, his attorney to deliver seisin of the same. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), 26 March, 32 Hen. VIII (1541).

Indenture made 1 June, 35 Hen. VIII (1543), by which Robard Sharpe, and John Swanton, supervisors of lands &c. of late Margaret Odeliam, now belonging to the guild of the Purification of our B. Lady, demise to Nicholas Avies, the elder, roughmason, four pieces of arable land containing by estimation 16 acres in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), for 21 years, at an annual rent of 20s, with consent of the alderman Dye and brethren of the gild.

Indenture made 1 July, 35 Hen. VIII (1543), by which Robert Sharpe, tallowchandler of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), and John Swanton, brewer, keepers of the lands and tenements of Candlemas Guild, demise to Thomas Lacy of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) a messuage in the Marketsted of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid, for 20 years, at an annual rent of 33s. 4d.
