Indenture made 20 January, 31 Elizabeth, by which Michael Dunne of Bromley Abbots acknowledges the receipt of certain deeds, temp. Henry VII, belonging to a messuage and lands in Bromley, left to the said Michael and John Dunne his brother by Edmund Dune their father, of Admaston. [English] .

Indenture made 17 February, 40 Q. Elizabeth, by which John Smith of Bromley Pagetts, yeoman, demises to Hugh Leceter, labourer, Cassander his wife, and Hugh their son, a cottage in Bromley for the term of their lives, at an annual rent of 4s.

GNOSTALL. Power of attorney from Robert Whittegreue of Burton, near Stafford , appointing Thomas Jones and Thomas Caldewell his true and legitimate attorneys to surrender into the hands of the prebendary of Beverly hall at Gnostall a messuage with lands adjacent near Beverley, called Geffrey's, and three fields near Alwaysmore, and three others called le Shild croft, Asty, and Watcrofte, to the use of Thomas Forst, chaplain, William Forst , and Richard Forst the son of William Forst , and their assigns in perpetuity. Dated 21 May, 19 Hen. VII.

Bedford , in part fulfilment of a certain Chancery decree dated 3 July, Trinity term last, grants to Edmund Pedder and Thomas Crosse the whole of his manor of Moreton in co. Stafford, in trust for him, his wife Elizabeth and his heirs. Dated 26 October, 1 Q. Mary (1553).

BROMLEY. Thomas Kynneresley of Loxley, in co. Stafford, esq., and John Kyrrensby and John Fowle , gentlemen, in performance of the last will of Emota Stanlowe , deceased, remit and quit-claim to Richard Stanlowe all right in a burgage or messuage in Bromley, and appoint Thomas Crosse, sen., their attorney to give seisin. Dated at Bromley on the vigil of St. John the Baptist, 22 Hen. VIII. .

MORTON. Thomas Gifford, late of Chillington in the county of Stafford, esq., grants to Thomas Forster and Mary his wife the manor of Morton. Dated 29 April, 22 Hen. VIII. .

An exemplification of a recovery, dated at Westminster, 14 June, 23 Hen. VIII, for passing the manor of Morton, with 6 messuages, 300 acres of land, 100 acres of meadow, 300 acres of pasture, 100 acres of wood, and 100 acres of underwood and furze, with appurtenances in Morton, to Thomas Forster, gent. .

Seventeenth-century transcripts of (i) a lease by Ch. Ch. to William Kirkman and Alece his wife of two closes lying outside Oseney gate in the parish of S. Nicholas, called the Horse Close (now held by the said William) [except all wood underwood and growing trees]. For 20 years. Rent: 40/-. 2 Aug. ⟨1547.⟩ (ii) A grant (Latin) appointing for life David ap Robert, yeoman, their bailiff, collector of rents, and ruler of all their possessions temporal and spiritual in Staffordshire, Worcestershire and Montgomeryshire, after the death of William Coxe , now possessed of the office. Salary: £16/16/8. [Here the transcript ends: it is followed by fragments of business memoranda, in the same hand.]

Indentures in English witnessing that George Neville lord of Bergavenny has sold to Thomas Cumberford , for £580, his manor of Wyggynton, to the value of £28/13/4 a year, free of all charges whatsoever. 10 May ⟨1513.⟩

Thomas Cumberford Esq., of Cumberford is bound to George Nevell Lord of Borgevenny, kt., in £400, payable at Easter. (Latin.) 16 Feb. ⟨1520.⟩ The condition of the bond is that if T. C. keep the award of Master Cuthbert Tunstall, master of the Kingis Recordes and Rollys, Sir Robert Brudenell , and Sir Lewes Pollard , kts., two of the king’s Justices, touching the right to the manor of Wiggington; and if the said arbitration cannot end the dispute he is to stand by the award of Cardinal Wolsey .

George Nevyle, kt., lord of Bergavenny, gives power to attorney to John Duke to receive from Thomas Comberford Esq., documents relating to the manor of Wiggington, according to the award of Cardinal Wolsey . (Signed) G. Bergawinne . 13 Dec. ⟨1520.⟩

Indenture, reciting the disputes between lord B⟨ergavenny⟩ and T⟨homas⟩ C⟨umberford⟩ and noting that the decree in Chancery had not been carried out, and witnessing that lord B. has now granted the manor of W⟨igginton⟩ to T. C. for £180, of which £120 has already been paid, and for £29 a year. T. C. then conveyed his right in the manor to others, as shown by a fien [see MM. 100]. 20 June ⟨1523.⟩

Letters patent exemplyfying a fine made on the morrow of All Souls, 15 Hen. VIII, by which George Nevile, kt., Th. Cumberforth Esq., and Dorothy his wife, granted to John Fitz-James, kt., chief baron of the Excheqor, Thomas Fitzherbert, clerk, Antony Babyngton Esq., Roland Babyngton , William Whithalghe and Edmund Tumour , the manors of Wyggyngton and Cumberforthe for £29 a year. 6 Nov. ⟨1523.⟩

Fine by which George Nevyle, kt., lord of Bergevenny, grants to Rouland Hylle , Richard Wylsone , Thomas Lee , William Cotton , and William Hylle , John Gratewood , and Thomas Dyremayne , a rent of £29 in Wyggyntone, Hoppas Cotton, Cumberford, and Tamworth. For this they gave him £600. (Both halves of the indenture are preserved.) ⟨27 Jan.⟩ 1534.

21 July ⟨1534.⟩ Letters patent of Hen. VIII inspecting (i) George Lord Burgavenny’s bill in Chancery against Thomas Cumberforth . The plea is that T. C. acquired the manor of Wyggynton for £580, but on condition that he should restore it to G. lord B. if the latter repaid the purchase money, with a sum to be decided by the arbitration of Sir John Aston and Sir Edward Ferrers , kts., for improvements, within 6 years. On his refusal to do so G. lord B. filed this complaint. (ii) the sub poena summoning T. C. (6 Nov. 10 Hen. VIII). (iii) The answer of T. C., who denied that the sale had been conditional. They had made the bargain about the 8th of May 5 Hen. VIII, and the indentures had been drawn up on the 10th., but lord B. would not seal them until he had received £100 in part payment from T. C., and when this had been done he still refused to seal, demanding the £100 as a loan until his return from France. T. C. replied that this was impossible, as he had pledged his lands to the clear yearly value of £32/13/4 in order to raise the £580, but lord B. would not return the £100. Lord B. then went to France. Afterwards one Doctor Roote, ‘being of Counseille with the seid lord, movyd unto the seid’ T. C., that if lord B. repaid the £580 he should have back his manor. Thomas disagreed, but not knowing how he should come to the perfection of his bargain nor to the repayment of his money, sealed the bill which lord B. had drawn up containing the above mentioned condition. The deposition of Dr. Roote (doctor in decrees and parson of Bukstes in Sussex , age 49) examined 30 Nov. 10 Hen. VIII, said that the Easter before the king went abroad, he, John Roote his brother, Walter Myles , Antony Fitzherbert sergeant at law &c. were with lord B. in his place at Paternoster Row in London, when the said bargain was made. John Roote drew up the bill containing the conditional clause there on 6 June 5 Hen. VIII, and T. C. sealed it without any compulsion. ‘Which bill was then made in great haste because the king was in preparyng him toward Canterbury and had ywyn knowledge to lye at the seid lordes place at Birlyng.’ William Leicester of Coffeton (Worcs.) gentleman, age 78, said that about 5 years ago, when he gave up his office of Receivership in Staffordshire under lord Burgavenny, he was present in Paternoster Row and heard the terms of the conditional sale, and the fact that the condition was sealed before the indentures. John Roote of Litlyngton (Sussex), gentleman, 60, also present, and wrote the bill. Walter Myles , receiver to part of the lands of the lord B., gent., aged 47. For T. C. Rychard Covert of Slagham (Sussex) Esq., age 54, examined 9 Feb. 10 Hen. VIII, said that 4 Hen. VIII there had been ‘a variaunce’ between T. C. and lord B. by reason of their two manors adjoining in Staffordshire, and that T. C. asked him to approach lord B. about leasing the manor to T. C. John Lucas servant of T. C., 33 yrs., said that Antony Babyngton had in Westminster Hall, on May 12, reported to him his lord’s willingness to sell the manor. He was present at the bargain, in Lord B.’s place ‘beside the pollis’, in London. His master was under the impression that he had made a clear purchase. William Sabyn, servant of T. C., age 30, remembered that his lord had told him that he had ‘smitten a pleyn bargayne’ with lord B. Antony Babyngton, examined 21 Feb. 11 Hen. VIII (adds nothing). A memorandum follows, to the effect that Lord B. produced in Chancery the bill containing the 6 years clause. The result was that lord B. recovered the manor, and the arbitrators [ Cuthbert Tunstall, Master of the Rolls, Robert Brudenell, kt., Lewis Pollerd, kt.] were ordered by a certain date to give judgment on the amount of damages.
