Dated 20 December, 39 Q. Elizabeth, 1596.

Indenture made 24 December, 45 Q. Elizabeth, 1602 by which Gilbert Spalding of Hawstead (Hawsted, in the county of Suffolk), sells to Thomas Cooke, tailor a messuage &c. in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), next Risbygate in consideration of a sum of £39 paid to the said Gilbert.

Recognizance entered into by Elizabeth Milward of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) on her being allowed to keep an alehouse in that town. Dated 24 January, 1 James I (1604).

Sir Robert Jermyn of Rushbrooke (Rushbrooke, co. Suffolk), kt., grants to Edmund Corksage of Stanstead (Stansteed), taylor, a cottage or shop situate in 'le Rayngate streete' in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), near a sherehowse and three pieces of a farm ("pandi(?)") lying near the tenement of Alice Corksage, widow, being part of a garden called le Sentryyard. Indenture made 30 May, 1657, by which Edward Freeman of Wymondham (Wymondham, Norfolk), husbandman, in consideration of the sum of fifty pounds, demises to Joseph Alexander of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), apothecary, in Guildhall street, a messuage in Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) for 30 years, at an annual rent of a pepper corn.

Indenture made 14 April, 21 Charles II (1680), by which James, earl of Suffolk, steward of the franchises of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), appoints Jonathan Perry of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), gent. his deputy steward of the said franchises during the will and pleasure of the said earl.

Indenture dated 28 September, 21 Charles II (1680), by which John Sothebie, esq., and others, feoffees of the town lands of Bury St Edmunds (Bury), in consideration of the sum of £15, have demised to Samuel Burrough, baker, certain small tenements for 50 years, at an annual rent of 5s.

Indenture made 13 June, 28 Charles II (1687), by which the rt. hon. James, "earle" of Suffolk, appoints John Catesby, of Clifford's Inn, gent., steward of the franchise of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) during pleasure.

Dated at Beccles (Becclis) the Sunday next before the feast-of St. Matthew, 22 Ed. I (19 Sept. 1294). Endorsed, "de fine rebellionis contra Regem per homines dicte ville tempore vacantis abbatie."

Alvesbourn or Alnesbourn Priory. Robert, the prior, and canons of Alvesbrunne remit and quit-claim to William de Kirkeby, the prior, and convent of the Holy Trinity, Norwich, all action, right, and claim in 20s. annual rent, assigned to the former by Albert de Nevyle and his heirs out of the half of a certain water-mill in Keswick (Kesewyk), formerly called 'le Oldemylne,' but now destroyed and the arrears of which for 28 years they had claimed; for this remission and quit- claim the said prior and convent of Norwich gave 16 marks of silver. Dated at Norwich the Tuesday next after the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 14 Ed. I (25 Jue 1286).

BRESETH. Exemplification by Robert prior of the Holy Trinity, Norwich, of a composition dated 5 Kalends June (28 May), 1259 between Stephen the prior and convent of Nobiliac in the diocese of Limoges, and John the prior and convent of St. Leonard, Bresethe, respecting the rights of the former house over the latter, including visitation every five yers, and a yearly pension of 10s.; with confirmation by the bishop of Norwich dated at Thetford (Thefford) 5 id. WIRLINGHAM (Little). Symon, the prior and convent of Norwich confirm to the monastery of Buttley the church of Little Worlingham (Little Wirlingham St. Peter), appropriated to that monastery by Walter de Suffeld, bp. of Norwich, with 18 acres of land after the death of Hugh de Upton, the present vicar paying annually to his successors. Dated at Norwich, 3 Id. Sept. (11 Sept.), 5 of his pontificate, i.e. 1249.

GISSING, co. Norfolk. Confirmation by Nicholas the prior and convent of Norwich of a confirmation by Roger bp. of Norwich of a grant by his predecessor John, c. 1200-06, of the appropriation of the church of Gissing (Gyssing) to the monastery of Buttele. Dated 14 kal. Nov. (19 Oct.) 1266; the bishop's confirmation being dated at Heveningham (Hevenengham).

Copy kept by the prior and convent of Norwich of the composition between the prior and convent of Buttele and master John de Thweyt, rector of the church of Winterton (Wynterton), concerning the tithes of West Somerton, with the consent of the patron of Winterton (Wynterton) Robert Clere. Dated 12 March 1342/3, at Norwich.

DEBENHAM. Composition between the prior and convent of Ely as appropriators of the church of Winston of the one part, and the prior and convent of Buttelee as appropriators of the church of Debenham of the other, concerning the right to certain tithes. Dated at Butley (Buttelee), 4 June, 35 Ed. III, 1361.

HOLLESLEY, &c. Indenture made 20 May, 38 Elizabeth (1596), witnesseth that William Cade of London, gent., has leased to John Hobart of the Middle Temple 40 acres of marsh in Hollesley (Howesley), and lands and tenements &c. elsewhere, as in letters patent, 37 of Q. Eliz., being part of the lands of the dissolved monastery of Butley in Suffolk, for 21 years.

DODNASH (Priory of). A fragment of a roll containing seven deeds of lands, &c. in the parish of Dodnash . [Temp. Ed. II, c. 1300.]

(a) Maurice de Dodenach grants the whole of his land of Langelond of the fee of Morrell to Thos. de Dodenach his brother, in exchange for land of the fee of the prior of the Holy Trinity at 'Scarboteswelle.'

(b) Maurice de Dodnash grants to Thomas de Dodnash his brother, for his homage and service and for half a mark, the whole of his land called Lagelond of the fee of Morrell, for an annual rent of 10d.

(c) Sir Hubert de Briseworth, kt., grants to Thomas de Dodenach the whole of the tenement which he held of Maurice de Dodenach his brother in the village of Bentley (Bentleye), viz. of Morrell's fee, as is witnessed in the same charter.

(d) Wimerus, son of Hervey de Dodenash, grants to Thomas, son of Maurice de Dodenash his uncle, for his homage and service, the whole part of the mill of Dodenash .

Walter de Ribof grants and confirms to the church of St. James of Dunwich and house of the lepers, and to Hubert, chaplain there, and his decessors, for the health of the soul of H. de Cressi and himself, &c., 40 acres of land in Brandeston (Brantest)', together with other lands, rents, tithes, &c. (c. 1190-1200)

Indenture dated at Dodenasch the Monday next before the feast of St. Michael, 1 Rich. II (28 Sept. 1377), by which Roger the prior and convent of Dodnash demise to John Cubbuc (Cukkuc?), sen., and John Cubbuc (Cukkuc?), jun., lands in Tattingstone (Matyngstone [ recte Tatyngstone]), Bentley (Benteleye), &c. for 9 years, paying annually 6s. 8d. Edmund Lyster, master of the hospital of St. James, apostle, of Donawyc, and the brethren and sisters of the same place, grant to farm to William Burnham of Earl Soham (Earl's Soham) a piece of land in the village of Brandeston (Brandyston), paying annually for the same 3s. 4d.
