Convention between Richard, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, and Sir Ralph Bockyng, about the sub-stewardship of the abbey. [Sir John de Stasyngges being steward] [Temp. Ed. I.] (c. 1312?) John de Rammesdene of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) grants to Thomas, the abbot, and convent of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), in frankalmoigne, 2s. of annual rent from his messuage in 'le Eldemarketestede' of Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund), to be distributed among the monks "dies qua duplex sonittus in adventu Domine cum missarum sollempnitate celebratur". Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St Edmund) the Friday next after the feast of St. Matthew, 33 Ed. I [24 Sept. 1305]. (Fine deed, written in large hand). Witnessed, Edmund son of Luke de St. Eadmund, William de Gypwic, and Laur. de Reda, bailiffs, etc.

PAKENHAM, BERTON, and ROUGHAM. Thomas, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund agree with sir Edmund de Pakenham concerning the rents of certain lands in Pakenham, Great Barton (Berton), and Rougham (Rughham). Dated ..., 1308. [Greater part effaced.]

Roger de Multon, parson of Chedburgh (Chetebere), remits and quit-claims to the hospital of St. Peter, all his right to six-pence annual rent from six acres of land in the fields of Westley (Westle). Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund)'s the Friday next after the feast of St. Michael, 4 Ed. II (2 Oct. 1310).

Gilbert de Neketone of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants to Ralph de Mildenhale 9s. of annual rent in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), from a shop situated in the street which is called 'La Rue Marchaunde.' Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Friday after the feast of the Nativity of St. John B., 4 Ed. II (25 June 1311). Witn. John de Ingham and John de Lyncoln, bailiffs, Thomas le Cornur, alderman.

Bartholomew, son of Augustine de Walsyngham, remits and quitclaims to Richard, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, all right in one messuage, lands, and tenements which were Augustine's, the father of the said Bartholomew, in the villages of Rickinghall Inferior (Lower Rikynghale), Wattisfield (Watlesfeld), and Hinderclay (Hildercle). Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), 21 June, 18 Ed. II (1325).

Richard Vileyn of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants and confirms to Thomas de Swanitone, keeper of the hospital of St. Peter without the gate of Rysby of St. Edmund, and the brethren there, 12d. of annual rent from a messuage in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the street called Scolehallestrete. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Monday next after the feast of St. Matthew, 18 Ed. II (24 Sept. 1324). Witn. Stephen de Ecclesia, alderman, John de Lincoln, bailiff etc.

William de Shellond of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants to sir Richard, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, in frankalmoigne, 6d. of annual quit-rent arising out of five acres of arable land in Fornham formely Ralph Kempe 's, for the use of the latter. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Monday next after the feast of the Invention of the Cross, 19 Ed. II (5 May 1326). Witn. Roger Baldwyne of Stowmarket (Stowemercat) grants to William de Bernigham of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) one messuage with edifices and appurtenances in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the merchants' street (Vicus mercatorum). Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Monday next after Michaelmas, 9 Ed. III (2 Oct. 1335). Witn. Robert de Paston, alderman Henry Paux and John de Heunigham, bailiffs, etc.

⟨Worlingworth.⟩ John, son of Robert de Wilryngworth, quit-claims to William, the abbot of St. Edmund, all his right in two acres and a half of land in 'Stannardiscrofts;' also certain meadow and pasture land. Dated at Worlingworth (Wilryngworth) the Saturday before the feast of St. Mark the evangelist, 13 Ed. III (24 April 1339).

Andrew Shurkyld of Northwold grants to William de Waketon, Geoffrey de Caverham and Alan Grene of Swanton, chaplains and brethren of the hospital of St. Peter one acre of land in the fields of the town of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) without the gate called Rysby gate. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Thursday next after the feast of the Epiphany, 14 Ed. III (12 Jan. 1341). Witn. [Richard] de Waltham and John de Honyngham, bailiffs etc.

William Maymond, master of the hospital of St. Nicholas of St. Edmund, and the brethren there, grant to Alan, son of Alan Grene of Swanton , one acre and one rood of land lying in the fields of the town ("villa") of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in a place called 'le Spynthelfeld', in exchange for an acre without the east gate. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Tuesday on the feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin, 17 Ed. III (25 March 1343). Witn. John de Flemton, chaplain, grants to the abbot and convent of St. Edmund a messuage and 35 acres and a half of land in Fornham and Timworth (Tymworth) for the support of the office of chamberlain. Dated at Fornham All Saints, the Thursday on the morrow of St. Laurence [i.e. the archbishop, not the deacon], 29 Ed. III (4 Feb. 1355 (?, a Wednesday)).

RISEBY, &c. William, the abbot of St. Edmund of Bury, grants to the prior and convent of St. Edmund certain lands, tenements, and rents in the villages of Risby (Rysby), Lackford (Lacforde), and Flempton (Flemtone) which were formerly sir John de Rysby's, kt., to the office of the cellarer for the purpose of keeping an anniversary each year to the memory of the said William. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Sunday next after the feast of All Saints, 31 Ed. III (5 Nov. 1357).

William Blounvyle grants and quit-claims to sir Thomas de Morieux', kt., Ralph, son of Ralph de Bokkyngge, and William Suklyng, chaplain, all right and claim in a messuage in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), which he had by the gift of Ralph de Bokkyng, knt. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) the Thursday after the feast of St. Gregory, 31 Ed. III (16 March 1357).

BARTON (Great). Indenture made between John de Gosford, the prior of St. Edmund of Bury, and convent of the same, at the time of a vacancy in the abbacy, of the one part, and John Overton of Moulton (Multon) of the other, witnesseth that the said prior and convent have demised to the said John their manor of Redwell (Redewelle) with 'le Cagehalle' in Great Barton (Bertone) near St. Edmund, for 20 years, paying annually to the chamberlain of St. Edmund at Bury £10 for the first 10 years, and £12 for the last 10 years, with other conditions. Dated on the feast of St. Matthew, 6 Rich. II (21 Sept. 1382).

ROUGHAM. Indenture witnessing that William, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, have demised to John Bacun of Hessett their manor of Hessett, with two parts of the manor of Chavents (Chanets) in Rougham, for 6 years, from Michaelmas, 18 Rich. II, paying annually for the same £11. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) the Thursday before the feast of St. Michael (24 Sept. 1394) the above year.

William Draghton of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund) and others confirm to Edward Woderton, Alice his wife, and Thomas Bernyngham, one tenement in the village of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) in the street called le Heyestrete. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid the Wednesday before the feast of St. Luke, evang., 21 Rich. II (17 Oct. 1397).

Indenture witnessing that whereas Ralph Bayle of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), draper, has granted to Henry Kyrton of Bury St Edmunds (Bury) aforesaid and Agnes his wife one tenement in the village of Bury St Edmunds (Bury St. Edmund), in the street called le Heyestrete, it is on condition of their paying during two years without the delay of a single day at stated periods 8 marks and 10s. (c. 1390-1400.)

BRESETH. Exemplification by Robert prior of the Holy Trinity, Norwich, of a composition dated 5 Kalends June (28 May), 1259 between Stephen the prior and convent of Nobiliac in the diocese of Limoges, and John the prior and convent of St. Leonard, Bresethe, respecting the rights of the former house over the latter, including visitation every five yers, and a yearly pension of 10s.; with confirmation by the bishop of Norwich dated at Thetford (Thefford) 5 id. May 1310. Dated in the chapter-house of Bresethe, 17 Kl. August, (16 July) 1310. ( Robert, prior)

Bond entered into by Emma de Beauchamp, abbess, and convent of Brusyard, to Henry, bp. of Norwich, and his successors, to pay annually 13s. 4d., by reason of the appropriation of the church of Bruisyard (Brusyard), and 12d to the prior and chapter of Norwich. Dated at Norwich, 15 June, 1390.

Copy kept by the prior and convent of Norwich of the composition between the prior and convent of Buttele and master John de Thweyt, rector of the church of Winterton (Wynterton), concerning the tithes of West Somerton, with the consent of the patron of Winterton (Wynterton) Robert Clere. Dated 12 March 1342/3, at Norwich.

DEBENHAM. Composition between the prior and convent of Ely as appropriators of the church of Winston of the one part, and the prior and convent of Buttelee as appropriators of the church of Debenham of the other, concerning the right to certain tithes. Dated at Butley (Buttelee), 4 June, 35 Ed. III, 1361.

DODNASH (Priory of). A fragment of a roll containing seven deeds of lands, &c. in the parish of Dodnash . [Temp. Ed. II, c. 1300.]

(a) Maurice de Dodenach grants the whole of his land of Langelond of the fee of Morrell to Thos. de Dodenach his brother, in exchange for land of the fee of the prior of the Holy Trinity at 'Scarboteswelle.'

(b) Maurice de Dodnash grants to Thomas de Dodnash his brother, for his homage and service and for half a mark, the whole of his land called Lagelond of the fee of Morrell, for an annual rent of 10d.

(c) Sir Hubert de Briseworth, kt., grants to Thomas de Dodenach the whole of the tenement which he held of Maurice de Dodenach his brother in the village of Bentley (Bentleye), viz. of Morrell's fee, as is witnessed in the same charter.

(d) Wimerus, son of Hervey de Dodenash, grants to Thomas, son of Maurice de Dodenash his uncle, for his homage and service, the whole part of the mill of Dodenash .
