PRESTWICH. Letters patent of King William III, dated 23 Dec., 1682, granted to John Lake, bp. of Sodor and Man , to enable him to hold in commendam the rectory of Prestwich and the prebend of Fridathorp in St. Peter's church, York.

AYLSHAM and FAKENHAM. Exchequer Constat extracted from the great roll of the pipe, [44 Edw. III], containing a grant of the manor of Wyghton with the hundred of Northgreneho and the manors of Aylesham and Fakenhamdam in co. Norfolk, the manor of Saham in county Cambridge, the manor of Whitgift, co. York, manor of Berton Bristol, co. Gloster, manor of Sevenhampton and Stratton, co. Wiltes, to Robert de Knolles and Constance his wife for the whole term of their lives at an annual rent of £745 7s. The acquittance is given to the prior and convent of Ely for £76 13s. 4d., being the reserved rent for a portion of the year due for the manor of Saham, co. Cambridge, committed to the said prior and convent, 26 Sept., [43 Edw. III], at a rent of £100 per annum.

Thomas Wolsey, archbishop of York, remits and quit-claims to the duke of Norfolk, Thomas Wentworth, Philip Tylney, John Cornewales, Edmund Wyndham, and Edmund Knevet, all right, &c. to lands, advowsons, &c. belonging to the priory of Felixstowe, co. Suffolk. Dated 20 October, 21 Hen. VIII (1529). Granted to them by Will. Capon, the master of the College of St. Mary at Gipewic of which he was the founder.

Convention between the church of Kirkestal and the church of the Holy Trinity, York, by which the church of Kirkestal agrees to pay annually 20s. as compensation for tithes which they were accustomed to have from the lands which the monks of Kirkestal hold in the parish of Ledes, viz. 4 carucates of land in West Hadigleia (Haddlesey), half in Est Hadigleia, 2 carucates in West Alretuna, one bovate in East Alretun, the assart of Sinleia, of Mideleia, le Enclov, Westrod[aid] the vale of Bramleia. Witn. Richard abbot of Fountains etc. (c. 1133-43.) .

Ralph, the abbot, and the convent of Kyrkestall confirm to Reiner de Pontefr[act] and his heirs their messuage in Pontefract which sir Robt. de Laci gave them for an inn ("pro hospicio habendo"), paying annually one stone of wax at the Assumption B. M. V., the light at the altar of the church; reserving the use of the house for their "hospicium" when they visit the place. (c. 1182-1190.) .

Ralph, the abbot, and convent of Kirkestal grant to William, son of Ernis of Alreton , eleven and a half acres of land in West Alreton, which they had by the gift of his mother Juliana , at an annual rent of 6d. for all services; also they grant one other acre in West Alreton which Ernis his father held of them. (c. 1182-1190.) .

Convention made between Maurice, the abbot, and convent of Kirkestall, of the one part, and Robert the son of Richard de Lofthusun of the other, by which the said abbot and convent grant to the said Robert a bovate of land in Lofthusun (Lofthous), to hold the same from the feast of St. Martin, 1235, for 8 years, at an annual payment of 3s. 6d. (Very minute writing.) .

Robert de Stapelton, son of William de Stapelton , confirms to William his brother, for his homage and service, the whole of his land which he has in the village of Brameley of the gift of Emma his mother, excepting the service of the heirs of John de Lungheuilers and of Robert de Coygners and his heirs of Westermoley. Witn. sir John de Hoderale, steward of Pontefract . (c. 1250-60.) .

Richard, son of Robert of the cemetery "de cimiterio" of Allerton , grants to the monks of Kirkestall the whole of his land in Colwaynrode, also he quit-claims all his right in all lands, mills, woods, &c. of which the said monks were seised in the year 1238, viz. in the territories of Allerton, Hedingleid , and Osmundthorp. Witn. Alan, vicar of Ledes .

Maurice, the abbot, and the convent of St. Mary, Kirkestall, grant to William, son of Henry "Cythariste" (the harper) , the half of one messuage and the half of one toft in the village of Calverley, which Robert de Bernes bought of Jordan son of Hugh de Secroft : paying annually sixpence. (c. 1220-40.) .

Adam Gandon grants to the monks of Kirkestall the whole of his land which he had at the head of the meadow of the said monks in Pudekessai. (c. 1250-60.) (Partly obliterated.) .

Walter, son of Adam Samson of Puddesay , confirms to the abbot of Kirkstall with his body an annual rent of 2s. out of the village of Puddesay from land of Richard de Puddesay, carpenter. (c. 1240-50.) .

William, the abbot, and the convent of Kyrkestal demise to farm to William de Brerehagh 5 acres of land and a meadow in Arthington, for 20 years, from the feast of St. Martin, 1334, at an annual rent of 20d. (Partly effaced and slightly mutilated.) .

John de Putee of Pontefract confirms to the convent of Kyrkestall that messuage which he held of them in the village of Pontefract in the way called Malefaygate. Dated at Pontefract the Tuesday next after the feast of St. Barnabas, 1344.

PATHLOBRIGGE. Martin Birkhed of Cotyngley, yeoman and John West of Beiston, yeoman, for a sum of £54 4s. 4d., sell to John Bekwith of Skewyk in Foyston the whole of a messuage and 2 closes of land in Pathlobrigge, co. York, part of the possessions of the monastery of Fountains. Dated 5 April, 4 Q. Eliz. .

FOUNTAIN'S (ABBEY). Martin Birkhed of Cotyngham and John West of Beiston , for a sum of £54 4s. 4d., sell to John Bekwith a messuage and two closes of land in Pathlobrigge, co. York, part of the monastery of Fountains. Dated 5 April, 4 Q. Eliz. .

RIEVAL (Abbey of). Thomas, son of Paulinus, canon of the church of St. Peter of York , quit-claims to the church and monks of St. Mary, Rievall, all the claim he has upon the bounds (divisas) of Welleburn near his land of Nagelt[on] and Wimbelt[on], viz. the bounds contained in the charters of Roger de Molbrai and Nigel his son; which bounds, the same Roger with his men and neighbours (vicinis) perambulated and affirmed by oath to be the right bounds of Wellebr', because the said Thomas's men falsely suggested to him that they belonged to his land of Nagelt[on] and Wimbelt[on]; and being unwilling unjustly to vex the said monks, he therefore, after full enquiry, makes this quit-claim, which is attested by Robert Paulini, his nephew, John de Hereford his cousin, and Robert son of Rainer Puer . (c. 1190-1200.) .

Licence from K. Rich. II to the abbey of Rieval to hold a messuage in York of the gift of Roger de Mereton, jun., a citizen of York, in mortmain, on payment of 20s. Dated at Westminster, 13 April, 3 Rich. II.

Charter (indented) witnessing that John de Euer quit-claims to the abbot and convent of Rievall all his right and claim in the puture of the forester or his servant, for their lands and tenements in Westerdale, also he releases the said abbot and convent of homage for the lands and tenements held of the said John in Little Brocton, Kyrkeby, and Clyveland. Dated at Ryevall on the octave of St. John the Bapt., 1302.

Walter, son of Alice, formerly wife of Henry, son of Walter de Folketon , confirms to the abbey of Ryevall, in frankalmoigne, the whole of his meadow in Gangemensteyn in the territory of Osgoteby, which they had by the gift of the said Alice. (c. 1270-80.) .

Walter, the abbot, and convent of Roche grant to Robert, son of Roger de Tyneslowe , for his homage and service, two bovates of land in Brameleye, which he had by the gift of his brother Walter ; rendering yearly 8s. (c. 1254-68.)

YORK (St. Mary's Abbey of). R. de Appeltun grants to the abbot and monks of St. Mary of York, two bovates of land in Appeltun, and a toft together with Orm , his sons and his following, who is in the toft; for the term of six years "Hec conventio incepit ad Pentecosten proximum postquam dominus Rex suscepit crucem Domini, [scil. Hen. II]" [5 June 1188].

William de Wintewrh, son of Hugh, son of Henry of the aforenamed village , grants to God and the monks of St. Mary Magdalen of Bretton, in frankalmoigne, 11 acres of land of his demesne in Wintewrh. (c. 1180-90.) .

Gregory, son of William of Cothewrth , grants to the church of St. Mary Magdalene of Bretton and the monks there, in frankalmoigne, the homage and service of Robert the smith of Wirkesburg for a plot of meadow in Cothewrth, held of him by the said Robert at an annual rent of 6d. (c. 1260-80.)
