HORKESLEY. Robert, son of Godebold , and Beatrix his wife give to God and St. Mary, and the monks of Thetford belonging to the church of Cluniac, all their churches, &c., for the souls of the King, their ancestors, parents, and friends, upon condition that the prior of Thetford, with the consent of the convent, should send as many monks to serve God in the church of St. Peter, Horkesley (Horchesleia), as the place would conveniently maintain; and for their common subsistence they assigned their other churches of Wiston (Wisetona), Assildeham, with 60 acres of land, and the half of the church of Boxsted (Bochesteda), the whole of the tithes of their lordship of Boxsted, and Beatrix gave the whole of the tithe of her marriage portion, and of the land which Turold her uncle gave her. Also they gave the tithe of Foleton (Foletona) and Fordham, and ten solidates of land in Roydon (Reidona). (c. 1130.) WISTON. Confirmation by Hubert, archbishop of Canterbury , of the appropriation of the church of Wisetune, [Norwich dioc.,] to the monks of Theford at Horkeslee. (c. 1195.) [Deed recites the appropriation by John, the bishop of Norwich .] [Mutilated.]

Robert, son of Philip , grants and confirms to the monks of Thetford at Horkesley, with the possessions, which Robert, son of Godebold , and Robert, son of Robert , and Philip, .... father, gave to them, viz. the churches of Horkesley, Wysentune, Hessildele, and half of the church of Boxstede, together with the whole of the tithes of his demesne of Boxstede, two parts of the tithes of Fordham and Foletun, the whole of the tithes of the marsh of Fulenesse, &c., in frankalmoigne. (c. 1190-1200.) .

William, constable of Hwivermeres , grants to the prior and monks of Horkesley in frankalmoigne certain lands and rents in the villages of Hwivermeres, Eyland, Shefege, Horkele, and Reydune, for refreshment on the anniversary of the donor, providing of candles before the high altar and for two masses weekly for him in the chapel of St. Mary, where his body is to be buried. c. 1200-10?.)

Philip the tailor , son of Roger the tailor, of Horkele , grants to the church of St. Peter, Horkesley, and the monks there, the whole of the meadow which he sometime held of them in the meadow of Horkele for the health of his soul and of Emma, formerly his wife. (c. 1200-10.)

Alan de Crefeld , son of Henry de Crefeld , grants to the church and monks of St. Peter, Horkele, in frankalmoigne, one piece of his land in Horkele. (c. 1220-30.)

Alan, son of Henry de Creffeld , grants to Robert, son of Philip , an annual rent of 4d. which Richard, son of Hugh the chaplain , was accustomed to pay for 3 acres of land in a field called 'Quydinere?,' in the parish of Great Horkesleye. (c. 1210-20 (?).)

FORDHAM (Little). L[aurence de S. Martino], bishop of Rochester , confirms to the prior and monks of Horkeley, in frankalmoigne, half an acre of land in Little Fordham. (c. 1260.)

John de Tewell (Stewell?) of Great Horkesley grants to Robert ... for his homage and service and two marks, the whole of his land in Great Horkesley; paying annually for the same 4d. for all service. c. 1270-80.)

Confirmation by William, son of Alan le Paumer of Wirmundeford , of his father's grant to Philip, son of Philip of Horkele , for his homage and service and for 4 marks and 40d. of four acres of land lying in the village of Widermundeford in a field called 'Westfeld;' paying annually 12d. for all service. Confirmation by Thomas the prior and convent of Teford of a sale made by the prior and monks of Horkesleye of three acres of land in Great Horkesleye to Richard de Preston , he paying annually for the same 12d. (1307, 35 Edw. I)

Philip, son of John of Horkesley , grants 11th year of Edward [I] to John ...caste of Wydermundeforth and Lescilia his wife two acres of arable land in the parish of [Wythermundeford].

William Brun of Hwinermers grants to the prior and monks of Horkesley all his right in one acre of meadow which he held of them in Alvenesfen in frankalmoigne; for this quit-claim the said prior and monks gave to him 40s. sterling. Dated the month of June, 12 Ed. [I]. ]

Alice, formerly wife of sir John de Watevylle, kt. , grants to James de Bures and Oliver de Stanweye, rector of ... 2s. of annual rent from Little Horkeleye. (c. 1310.) t. Edw. II. [Mutilated.]

William Renekyn of Little Horkeslee grants to Robert Intheheye and Sarra his wife one piece of arable land lying in the village of Little Horkeslee, between the land of the prior of Horkesley on the one side and the street called 'Heyestrete' on the other. Dated at Horkeslye on the vigil of the apostles SS. Peter and Paul 2 Ed. III.

Emma le Palmere , daughter of William le Palmere of Withermuadeford , grants to John atte Roch de Deitholt her messuage, lands, &c., in Withermendeford. Dated at Withermendeford on the morrow of St. Barnabas the apostle, 22 Ed. I. [Partly effaced.]

Roger de Prestonheye of Horkeslegh grants to Roger in the Hegg and Cristina his wife a certain croft and land in the village of Horkeslegh. Dated at Horkeslegh the Thursday next after the feast of St. Barnabas, 24 Ed. III.

Stephen le Cook , son and heir of John le Cook of Wythermondeford , grants to sir John Sakevile, rector of Wereholte Sakevill , and Adam le Cook son and heir of Gilbert Cook of Wythermondeford , and John Oliver of Staneweye , a tenement and all that appertains to it in the village of Wythermondeford. Dated there on the feast of the Invention of the Cross, 35 Ed. III.

At a court for the honour of Reylegh, held 27 Oct., 39 Ed. III, came the prior of Horkislegh and produced many charters showing that the tenements which the prior and convent of Horkislegh hold in Horkislegh of the aforesaid honour by knights' service, and for which default in suit had been made, were given to the prior and convent by Henry and Alan de Creffeld in frankalmoigne, and the prior in his own person made suit for the same.

Adam Cook of Withermundeforde grants to Thomas Whot of 'Leyre dil Hay,' Thomas Hancepee of Bergholte Saukevyll , and John Hervy of Peldone , 5 acres of land in a field called 'Pyrifeld' in the village of Little Horkeslegh. Dated at Little Horkeslegh, 10 Nov., 1 Rich. II.

Indenture between John de Rookwode of Stanfeld in the county of Suffolk of the one part, and the prior and monks of Horkislegh of the other part, witnesseth that the said John enfeoffs William Peek, vicar of Wyston , and others, with the lands of John de Lacford which descended to him by heirship, for the use of the prior and monks of Horkislegh, to celebrate for the souls of himself and others in the church of Little Horkislegh. [Mutilated.] Dated the Wednesday on the feast of the Conversion of St. Paul, 3 Rich. II.
