Collection Info

As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised MSS. Ch. Bucks. 1-94 and MSS. Rolls Bucks. 1-2. The 1878 catalogue divides the collection between Ravenstone Priory (Ch. 1-37), Notley or Nutley Abbey (Ch. 38-43), Tickford Priory ('34-44' - 60), and charters of unstated provenance. The three priories were part of the endowment of Christ Church; the documents in the present collection were acquired by Anthony Wood and given by him to the Bodleian. Related documents, originally part of the same archives, are in D. D. Ch. Ch. M.

The major later accessions are as follows:

  • Ch. 126-712: leases of New College Oxford property; for more details see the collection summary for Berks. (Berkshire).
  • Ch. 834-867: 13th-century documents relating to Hartwell
  • Ch. 882-1318: Thoresby Park deeds, purchased (?) from Lord Maners 1942. An additional finding aid is available in the library (Calendar of Thoresby Park Deeds, MS. Top. Bucks. c. 13).
  • Ch. 1324-1408: documents relating to Hartwell, Stone etc., purchased from Halliday, 1941.

Not included in the present catalogue are the 19th-century Wykeham family documents relating to Towersey (Ch. 1473-1509)
