Bull of pope Benedict XII, dated at Avignon, to the abbots and priors of black monks in England, notifying his approval of statutes of the Order [Benedictine] (copy), with a letter thereon to the same, from the proctors employed in the business at the Roman Court enjoyning the levying of a tax upon the order for defraying expenses; Avignon, 2 May 1337 (mutilated).

Beds, and Lynchelade and Sout[bury] in co. Bucks, to the use of Thomas, son of the said Thomas and Alice, and Matilda his wife.

Grant. Pateshull (Buckinghamshire) (manor). Sunday, feast of St. James [25 July], 46 Ed. III (1372). . Grant from Sir Thomas Wake of Bliseworth, kt., and Alice his wife, to Thomas Wake their son, and Matilda his wife, daughter of Sir John Pygot, kt., the whole of their manor of little Crowlee. Dated at Crowlee.

Writ. Westerdale Manor (Yorkshire, North Riding) (manor). 25 Feb., 10 Ed. [II] (1317). . Writ from King Edward II, to the sheriff of Warwick, reciting the inquisition on the death of Guy de Beauchamp, earl of Warwick, by which it was found that at his death he was seised in fee of the manor of Westerdale, a member of the barony of Castle Barnard, which said manor is alleged by John de Eure to be part of his barony of Stokesleye, and to have been in his possession ten weeks and more before the death of the said Guy; the said John having been dispossessed of the said manor by John le Irays, constable of Castle Barnard, the sheriff is commanded to make an inquiry into the said matters and to cite William la Zousche, who had married Alice, widow of the said Guy de Beauchamp, as the said manor had been assigned to her as dower. Confirmation. Lydiard Tregoze (Wiltshire) (manor). 6 July, 38 Ed. III (1364). . Confirmation by John de Grandison, bp. of Exeter, of the fine levied by of his brother Peter to Roger de Beauchamp and Sibil his wife, the bishop's niece, of the manor of Lydeyerd Tregoz with the advowson of the church, in the county of Wilts. Dated at Chuddelee (French).

Writ. West Horndon (Essex) (manor). 30th May, 1 of Ed. II (1308). . Writ from King Edward II to R. de Pers, sheriff of Essex, setting out the grant of the manor of West Hordon [sic], from William de Trent, late citizen of London, to William Noyl, to hold to him and his heirs, which manor James Beauflour (whose daughter William Noyl had married) demised for a term of years to Geoffrey de la Lee, without the assent of the said William, and the said Geoffrey by fine granted the said manor to Hugh le Despenser, jun., to hold to him and his heirs for ever, and by forfeiture the said manor came to the hands of the king and was still held by him ; the king assigns John de Cantebrigg, Robert de Asshele, and Henry Gernet to make inquisition as to the truth of the said premises. Dated at York. Endorsed: "Istud Breve adeo tarde michi liberatum fuit quod illud exequi non potui propter temporis brevitatem. R. de Pers, vic.".

Inquisition. Astcote (Northamptonshire) (manor). [1375] 49 Ed. III (1375). . Inquisition taken on the death in 42 or 43 [Ed. III] of Alianor, who was [wife of Rich. de Maundevill] and held the manor of Anescote [or Avenescote] of the king in capite; Thomas, son of Ralph Maundeville, is next heir [mutilated.]

Plea. Hatfield Peverel (Essex). Morrow of the close of Easter, 30 Ed. III (1356). . Plea in chancery on the morrow of the close of Easter, 30 Ed. III, concerning the manor of Hatfeld Peverel, returned by John de Coggeshale, escheator for the co. of Essex, as being held by Margery, wife of Nicholas de la Bech, and widow of Edmund Bacoun ; claimed by William de Molyns and Margery his wife, daughter of the said Margery and Edmund Bacoun.

Judgement. Wigan (Lancashire). 17 Ed. II (1324). . Judgement (from the Plea Rolls of 17 Ed. II) against Robert de Cliderhou, parson of Wigan, who had supplied Thomas, earl of Lancaster, with two men at arms (one being his own son Adam) and four foot soldiers well armed, against the king and of preaching publicly in his church on behalf of the earl. He is found guilty, is bailed in 1000 marks by thirteen persons and at last fined (but the amount of the fine is lost) (copy, in the reign of Ed. III).

Grant. Evesham, Benedictine abbey. Monday next after the feast of All Saints, 5 Rich. II (1381). . Indenture made between the abbot of Evesham of the one part, and Nicholas de Stafford of the other, being a grant of the wardship of Hugh, son of Hugh de Wrottesleye and Isabella his wife, until full age, for the lands etc. held of the abbey in Wrottesleye. Dated at Evesham (French).

Fine. Tidmington (Worcestershire) (manor). Quindene of St. Michael, 8 Ed. II (1314). . Fine made at Westminster, between Simon de Crombe and Joan his wife, plaintiffs, by Henry de Wenlond, their attorney, and Thomas le Botiller, defendant, concerning the manor of Tidilmynton with appurtenances, and one messuage, one carucate of land, and 10 marks of annual rent in Admundescote; by which the property is re-conveyed to the said Simon and Joan and their heirs.

Grant. Coulton (Yorkshire, North Riding) (manor), South Holme (Yorkshire, North Riding) (manor). Thursday next before Palm Sunday, 17 Rich. II. (1394). . Two deeds by which Brian Stapilton, Thomas Colvill, David de . . . if, John de Pykeryng, William de Sproxton, and Robert de . . . grant their manors of Caul[ton?] and Southolme in Ridale to Alice de Kirkeby, which manors they had by feoffment of Thomas de Etton of Gilling. Title. Southampton (Hampshire). St. Dunstan's day, 1390 (1390). . Title of Henry Seman to three tenements in Estrete [East Street] in the suburb of Southampton by descent from Felicia Cole.

Return for taxation. Canterbury, province, York, province. [1327-1377] (1377). . Document headed 'Nomina abbatum et prioratum certificantium literatorie et curie romanie valor monasteriorum eorundem secundum eandem certificationem' ; consisting of a list of religious houses in the Provinces of Canterbury and York, with amounts of money alongside each, perhaps assessments of value. The document is identified in the Catalogue of Charters as 'a return, temp. Edward III for taxation '; if so, the relevant tax has not yet been identified.

M. of Jorevall for ever (mutilated).

Assignment. Fountains Abbey (Cistercian). Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross, 6 Rich. II (1382). . Indenture tripartite witnessing that Richard de Ravenser, archdeacon of Lincoln, John de Ravenser, parson of the church of Algarkirk, and John de Waltham, canon of Hereford, assign to the abbot and convent of Fonteyns the manor of Queldryk [Wheldrake] which was formerly William Darell's, with 8 messuages, 19 tofts, 180 acres of land, 14 acres of meadow, 14 acres of wood, 100 acres of more, 6s. 1d. and one pair of gloves annual rent in Queldryk, upon condition that the said abbot and convent pay to the master and brethren of the hospital of St. Leonard, York, 16 marks annually for the support of certain charges imposed upon them by the donors. Chirograph witnessing that Ralph de Monthermer, earl of Gloucester, after the death of Herbert de St. Quintin, who held the manors of Frome, co. Dorset, and Stauntun Quintin, co. Wiltshire, of him in capite, on the petition of Margery his widow, assigns to her for her dower lands in Staunton Quintin and Frome, equivalent to the third parts of the said manors. Writ, plea of mort d'ancestor. York, Benedictine abbey of St. Mary. Friday in the quindene of the Purification B. M., 30 Ed. fil. Hen. [Ed. I] (1302). . Leaf with copies of "placita libertatis" of the abbey held at the gate of the abbey "in presencie domini E. Principis Wallie tunc per duos dies in abbathiam [sic] commorantis", viz. (1) writ of the King to the justices ordering please to be held at the abbey gate as claimed, dated at Lynlyscu [Linlithgow], 22 Dec. an. 30 [1301], and (2) Plea of mort d'ancestor in the case of John de Schupton v. Matilda de Munketon.
