Convention dated on the vigil of St. Matthew, apostle, 6 Ed. [I] (20 Sept. 1278), between the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter of the one part, and Adam de Cokefeud, merchant, of the other, viz. that the said brethren grant to the said Adam, for his fealty and service and 4s. of silver, one shop in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) in the street called Chapmannisrowze, paying annually for the same 30 pence, to the heirs of Thomas de Backyrgges 30 pence, and to the bailiffs of the town one penny. Witn. Geoffrey son of Robert, alderman William son of Bartholomew and William de Walpole, bailiffs.

Gilbert de Derham grants to William de Newenham, almoner of the church of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), for 5 marks, one croft called Bertonecroft in Mildenhall (Mildenhale), to hold for 5 years from Mich. 8 Ed. I (1280). [See Ch. Suffolk 88.]

ERYSWELL. Agreement between Robert de Tudenham, kt., and John, abbot of Bury St. Edmund, made before the judges itinerant at Cattishall (Catteshel) 15 Ed. [I], by which upon certain conditions he renounces all claim and recognises the right of the abbot and convent of Bury to a view of frankpledge for the village of Eriswell (Eryswell).

Geoffrey, son of William de Tostoke, and Margaret his mother, widow grant to Stephen de Wrotham, for his fealty and service and 4 marks and 4s. of silver, which he gave them to eneble them to fulfil the will of the said William, two acres of arable land called Tuktys in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) lying towards the little mill, paying annually to the heirs of Peter Marescall two pence. (c. 1250-60.) Witn. John son of Luke alderman, Ralph de Anhus, and Thomas de Boeringe, bailiff.

Geoffrey de Brakenest, John Dannard, Henry Maynard, Richard Wrong, William son of Reiner, Alexander de la Grene, William de Troux, Alexander Godefrey, Alan le Mellere, Alan Kempe, Vincent Godale, Alan son of Matthew, sen., Adam Fraunceys, Warine de Dunbergh, Robert de le Apiltone, Thomas Dannard, John de la Grene, John Case, Daniel le Cupere, John de Brakenest, Bartholomew de Nortone, Robert Becke, John le Clerck, Reginald le Draper, William Werpelock, Richardde Welington, Walter Godefrey, Nicholas de Miteford, Geoffrey de St. Edmund, Alan de Carletone, Richard de Brakenest, Richard le Cock, Thomas Wrong, William Porre, Philip de la Grene, Geoffrey de la Forthe, Roger Rogerum, Sewall Sycary, and John Cotoun bond themselves, their heirs and the whole of the community of Beccles (Becclis), under agreement with John, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund to make oath and assart yearly to the bailiffs of the abbot at the view of frankpledge for the whole community of Beccles (Becclis), under pain of a fine of 100 marks to the king. Dated at Beccles (Becclis) the Sunday next before the feast-of St. Matthew, 22 Ed. I (19 Sept. 1294). Endorsed, "de fine rebellionis contra Regem per homines dicte ville tempore vacantis abbatie."

Alvesbourn or Alnesbourn Priory. Robert, the prior, and canons of Alvesbrunne remit and quit-claim to William de Kirkeby, the prior, and convent of the Holy Trinity, Norwich, all action, right, and claim in 20s. annual rent, assigned to the former by Albert de Nevyle and his heirs out of the half of a certain water-mill in Keswick (Kesewyk), formerly called 'le Oldemylne,' but now destroyed and the arrears of which for 28 years they had claimed; for this remission and quit- claim the said prior and convent of Norwich gave 16 marks of silver. Dated at Norwich the Tuesday next after the feast of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist, 14 Ed. I (25 Jue 1286).

BRESETH. Exemplification by Robert prior of the Holy Trinity, Norwich, of a composition dated 5 Kalends June (28 May), 1259 between Stephen the prior and convent of Nobiliac in the diocese of Limoges, and John the prior and convent of St. Leonard, Bresethe, respecting the rights of the former house over the latter, including visitation every five yers, and a yearly pension of 10s.; with confirmation by the bishop of Norwich dated at Thetford (Thefford) 5 id. May 1310. Dated in the chapter-house of Bresethe, 17 Kl. August, (16 July) 1310. ( Robert, prior)

WIRLINGHAM (Little). Symon, the prior and convent of Norwich confirm to the monastery of Buttley the church of Little Worlingham (Little Wirlingham St. Peter), appropriated to that monastery by Walter de Suffeld, bp. of Norwich, with 18 acres of land after the death of Hugh de Upton, the present vicar paying annually to his successors. Dated at Norwich, 3 Id. Sept. (11 Sept.), 5 of his pontificate, i.e. 1249.

GISSING, co. Norfolk. Confirmation by Nicholas the prior and convent of Norwich of a confirmation by Roger bp. of Norwich of a grant by his predecessor John, c. 1200-06, of the appropriation of the church of Gissing (Gyssing) to the monastery of Buttele. Dated 14 kal. Nov. (19 Oct.) 1266; the bishop's confirmation being dated at Heveningham (Hevenengham).

The will of the lady Beatrice relict of sir Peter, son of Roger Fitz-Osbert , dated Saturday after feast of St. Hilary, [42 or 52] Hen. III. To be buried in the Herringfleet (chapel of St Olave) near her husband. Bequest to her son Roger. [Greater part effaced.]

HERRINGFLEET. Ralph, son of William de Ferya, grants to the church of Herringfleet (St. Olave, Herlingflete), in frankalmoigne, 7d. annual rent, viz. from Hugh, son of Gilbert de Blundeston, and his heirs, 6d. for a tenement in Somerleyton, and 1d. from Hugh de Elmesete for a piece of land in Herringfleet (Herlingflete). (c. 1240-60.)

HANFORD. William de Badele quit-claims to the church of SS. Peter and Paul of Gypewic', in frankalmoigue, the gift which Roger de Badele his brother made to them of the half of the Hanford Mill (mill of Haneford). (c. 1230-40.)

Gerard, son of Arnold de Stanham, chaplain, grants to the church and canons of the Holy Trinity, Ipswich (Gipewic'), in frankalmoigne, the whole of his land with messuage and wood and appurtenances in Cretinge and Stanham of the fee of the monks of Bernay, and the whole of his land in Cretinge and Crowfield (Croffeld) which he held of Randulf de Braham, and the whole of his land which he held of Gregory Gleau in Crowfield (Croffeld) and in Coddenham (Codeham), and the whole of his land in Coddenham (Codeham), Crowfield (Croffeld), and Bosmere-and-Claydon Hundred (Bosemere) of the fee of the monks of Eya, paying annually 6d.; for this grant the said canons gave 20 marks of silver. Mutilated bull of Pope Innocent ⟨III⟩, dated at Lyon (Lyons), 15 day of [c. 1200] ... for collections in the dioceses of London, Rochester and Norwich for repair of the church of the Priory of Gip⟨peswic⟩ .

IPSWICH. Robert de Buteler of Hemingstone (Hemmingestune) grants to the house of St. Peter and St. Paul of Gypewic, in frankalmoigne, 6d., of annual rent from an area formerly belonging to Avicia "Tingtyicis" (the dyer) in the parish of Ipswich St Nicholas (St. Nicholas, Gypewic). (c. 1250-60.) Witn. Silvester Walkelin, Osbert de Foro, bailiffs of Ipswich (Gippewic)

Roger de Tuskynhed or Tuskynsack (see endorsement) grants to the church of the Holy Trinity, Ipswich, 7s. annual rent in Creting from the tenement held by Richard de Bosemere. (c. 1260-70.) (Partly effaced.)

Mutilated and effaced grant to the prior and canons of the Holy Trinity, Gipewic, of certain land in Creeting. (c. 1220-30.) (Witn. apparently the same as to the preceeding.)

SUFFOLK (?) or NORFOLK (?). Record of proceedings on the morrow of the translation of St. Benedict (year not given) in the church of Bramford before the subprior of Bresde, canon J. de Mendham acting for the prior of Gipiswic, and Roger de Tudeham, in a cause between the prior and convent of the Holy Trinity at Norwich and sir Robert de Carcon, knt. (c. 1230-40). Partly effaced.

An exchange made between the prior and convent of the Holy Trinity of Ipswich, and Adam, son of William de Bolonia of Creating , namely, that the said prior and convent gave to Adam four pieces of land in the parishes of Creating and Coddenham (Codeham) for two pieces in Creating. (c. 1240-50.)

STANHAM. Master Symon, son of Bartholomew de Stanham Lambert, grants to the church of the Holy Trinity of Ipswich (Gypeswic), in frankalmoigne, 6d. rent from land in Stanham, called Slohescropht. (c. 1240-50.)

Bartholomew, son of Roger the smith of Coddenham (Codeham), grants to the church of the Holy Trinity of Ipswich (Gipewic), in frankalmoigne, seven pieces of land in Coddenham (Codeham), paying annually to him and his heirs 26d.; for this grant the said canons gave him 5 marks of silver. (c. 1230-40.)

John Clement, burgess of Ipswich (Gypewyc), grants to the canons of the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, Gypewic, 6d. of annual rent for sustaining a light before the altar of the Blessed Virgin. Dated the Thursday, after the commemoration of souls, 23 Ed. I (3 Nov. 1295).

Confirmation by John [Peckham], archbishop of Canterbury, of the appropriation of the churches of St. Margaret at Leiston (Lestone) with the chapel of St Nicholas at Syswell, St. Andrew of Aldringham, St. Mary at Middleton, and St. Bothulph at Culpho (Colpho), to the abbot and convent of Leystone. Dated at Butley (Buttelee), 4 Kl. Mar. (26 Feb.), 1280/1281).

STOKE (Priory of). Hamo Pecche ("Peccatum"), son of Gilbert Peccatum, remits to the prior and convent of Stoke all his right in the tithes of his lordship of Gestingthorpe (Gestinget') [endorsed: 'Gestingetorp']. (c. 1220-30.)

⟨Walton (?) or Trimley St Martin (?)⟩ William, lord of Grimestune, grants to St. Felix and the monks there, in frankalmoigne, for the souls of his wife and of his successors 12d. from the land which was Eadnoth's, which Roger Cristemasse holds. (c. 1210-20.) [Done in the time of Robert, the prior.]
