St. Leonard’s, Wallingford.. Stephen de Stallis grants to the Hospital of St. John, W⟨allingford⟩ , in free alms, a corner messuage in the parish of St. Leonard’s, by the messuage formerly of Henry of Medford , opposite the messuage of Bartholomew Fryburne within the South Gate of W⟨allingford⟩ . Rent: 12d. to the fee farm of W⟨allingford⟩, and a clove gilly flower to the grantor. Witnesses: Alexander de Stallis, mayor, Richard of Britwalton , master Peter of Benham , William Blawe , Eustace Clem[ent] , John Hynner , Richard Mariot , bailiffs. ⟨c. 1230–c. 1240.⟩ The whole is excellently preserved. In the fold of the parchment at the bottom is, in Wood’s hand: ’Given to me by Dr. Tob: Garbrand a° 1664. Ant: Woode.’ See Life, ed. Clark, ii. 19.

BITTLESDEN, Abbey of. Memorandum that Wednesday after the feast of St. Ambrose the bishop, a citation was issued by H., Prior of Lenton , and conservator of the privileges and indulgences of the Cistercian order in the province of Canterbury, to the sub-prior of Esseby and the rector of Codesford (Cottisford, Oxfordshire?), to admonish Ralph, vicar of Tornebr' (Thornborough), in the deanery of Bucks. , and the prior and convent of Luffeld to abstain from all molestation towards the abbot and convent of Bittlesden, failing obedience to which monition to cite them to appear in the church of St. Mary the virgin, Nottingham , on Monday next after the Ascension of our Lord. Dated at Lenton, Wednesday after feast of St. Ambrose, 1251.

Ravenstone. Richard de Clifford, rector of R⟨avenstone⟩ , grants to William of R⟨avenstone⟩ and Christiana his wife the messuage which Edmund formerly held of the fee of the church of R⟨avenstone⟩ . Witnesses: Sir William of Divises, then prior of R⟨avenstone⟩ , Sir Michael chaplain of R⟨avenstone⟩ , Nicholas the clerk of R⟨avenstone⟩ , John Tonge , Walter of Schyrintone , William Caperun , John the clerk , Richard Facceneie . ⟨c. 1260.⟩

ABINGTON (Little). Margery, daughter and heir of John de Bhey, of Little Abinton , grants to Richard, brother of Peter le Baker, of Cambridge , one messuage in Little Abinton and land lying in the fields of the same village, with other land in the fields of Badberham . (c. 1280-90.) (With seal.)

TEVERSHAM. Hugh, of the manor ('de manerio'), grants in frankalmoigne for himself and his wife Berta to the prior and monks of Ely 12d. annual rent payable by his son William arising out of six acres of land and a messuage in Theversham for maintenance of a light at the altar of St Mary. [c. 1230-40]

WOTTON, ESCOUMB, and STANHOPE. Anthony [Bek], bishop of Durham , grants to Walter de Bermeton a toft and 127 acres of land of the waste in the fields of Wotton, Escoumb, and Stanhope, to hold the same for an annual rent of 62s. 3d. (c. 1290-1300.)

Robert Gernun , son of the late William Gernun of Tornham , grants to the abbey of St. John, Colchester, in frankalmoigne, the whole of a tenement which his brother Thomas held of him in the village of Wicham paying annually 2s. 4d. (c. 1260-70.)

Bond given to sir John Carbonel, sheriff of Essex and Hertford , 20 Ed. I. [Illegible.]

An acknowledgment from William de Hamme , that he has received from sir John Carbonel, sheriff of Essex , by the hands of Roger de Shireburn his clerk, 40s. of silver, which the said John levied of the goods of John de Say to his use by the king's writ. Dated at London the Friday next after the Quindena of St. Martin, 21 Ed. I.

HATFIELD PEVEREL (Priory of). Composition between Ralph, bishop of Norwich , and the prior and convent of Hatfield Peverel concerning the tithes arising out of the parishes of Terling and Hatfield. Dated 9 Kl. Aug. 1291.

WICKHAM (Little). John Vys-de-lu quit-claims to Richard de Wicham, clerk, all his right in a tenement with messuages and edifices which Walkeline Vis de lu his father had in Little Wicham in the parish of Bolemere, by the gift and feoffment of Hugh de Nassandre . (c. 1290.)

WOODHAM FERRERS. Master John de Thvyford, rector of Wodeham , acknowledges to have received of Richard de Flammamvill, proctor, of the abbot of Bec in England, two parts of all the tithes arising from the lordship of the lords of Ferrers, in the said parish of Wodeham, to farm paying annually to the proctor 60s. Dated 1259, the day of the translation of St. Swithin.

Chirograph reciting a mandate from Pope Gregory X, 4 Non. Apr. an. 4, to the priors of Merton and Bormundes[e], to hear and determine a suit for spoliation of tithes between the abbot and monks of Bec, and Robert, rector of Wodeham , who decree that the tithes arising from the lordships of the lords of Ferrers shall be farmed by the rector of Wodeham at a rent of 60s. annually. (1275.)

Confirmation (without recital) by King Henry III of Magna Carta and the Carta de Foresta; the so-called 'Parva Carta'. Dated at Westminster, 28 Jan., 21st of his reign (1237).

BERKHAMPSTEAD. Convention (indented) made the Saturday next after the feast of the Assumption of the B.V.M., 40 Hen. III, by which Bernard fitz-Ralph lets to farm to John, son of Adam Gossalmer , the whole of his part of the capital messuage, mill, &c., which were Osbert le Ster 's in Berchamstede, in the parish of Norh. at an annual rent of 28s.

BRODWATER and WICCHE (Hundreds of). Peter ... is bound to sir John Carbonel, sheriff of Essex and Hertford , in a sum of for the custody of the hundreds of Brodwater and Wicche from Easter, 20 Ed. [I], to the feast of the nativity of the B.V.M. Thursday in week of Pentecost. [Illegible]

STICHEHACH. Margery, daughter of Ralph de Gavele , grants to William, son of Simon de Thicheburst , for his homage and service, one virgate of land in the village of Stichehach which is called Reinhulle; paying annually to the cook of St. Alban's 10s., and to the said Margery and her heirs one pair of white gloves or one halfpenny; for this charter the said William gave 10 marks, (c. 1230.)

Recital by bishop of Rochester of a grant to the prior and convent of Tunbridge. [Mutilated.] Dated prid. id. Aug. at Malling 1242.

Grant from Gilebert son of Gilebert de la Burre to the priory of Tunebrige of his land at la Denne which he inherited from his father, of the fee of Henry Fromund . (c. 1240-50.)

ELHAM. An agreement reciting that whereas certain lands, tenements, rents, &c., in Elham, were granted to Henry, formerly the abbot, and convent of St. Radegund's, near Dover, by William, the prior, and convent of St. Andrew's, Rochester, for an annual payment of 10 marks, this chirograph witnesses that, in consequence of the said lands not being worth the said rent, the prior and convent agree to fix the annual rent at 8 marks, 6s. 8d. for the future. Dated 5 August, 1293.

STANESFELD. Agatha de la Kersunera and Thomas her son grant to Thomas de Muleton the whole of the land which they hold of the fee of Peter de Nerford in Stanesfeld at an annual rent of 3s. (c. 1230.)

Adam de Sumery grants to Henry fitz 'filio' Fenner of London , in exchange for the lands held by an annual quit-rent of a pound of pepper, a quit-rent of 31 pence, that Nigel, son of the priest was accustomed to pay for the land held of the said Adam. (c. 1210-12.)

BURLINGHAM. Humphrey, son of N. le Claver of Grovele , grants and quit-claims to Thomas de Waltune , all his right in the village of Birlingham, viz. an annual rent of 16d. from Adam de la Mare , 2d. from Henry Champeneis , 1d. from Symon, son of Adam de Cruce , 2d. from Alice, daughter of William Olegot , and 2d. from Letitia, daughter of Margaret . For this charter the said Humphrey gave to the said Thomas 11s. and one robe. (c. 1210-20.)

BLOFIELD. Sir Robert de Cateston, kt., quit-claims to Ralph, bp. of Norwich , and his successors, all right to fish or cut reeds or grass in any part of his great pool of Blofield, and in the upper part towards Witton. Dated at Breydeston on the vigil of St. Lawrence, 22 Ed. I.

BARMER. Copy (made in 1326) of the appropriation of the church of Bermere to the use of the prior and convent of Cokesford by Walter, bp. of Norwich , with the consent of Simon, the prior, and convent of Norwich, and William de Lydesterne the rector. The original was dated at Weseham 6 Id. Dec., 1252, and confirmed by prior of Norwich 10 kl. Aug. 1254, and confirmation by William, bp. of Norwich , and William the prior, and convent of Norwich, 6 non. Oct. 1326.
