Collection Info

As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection as catalogued in 1878 comprised MSS. Ch. Somerset 1-50, and MSS. Rolls Somerset 1-15, of unrecorded provenance. Several documents relating to the Hastings family, earls of Huntingdon, are probably from the collections of Thomas Carte (-1754) (see E. Craster, History of the Bodleian Library (1952), p. 101).

MSS. Ch. Somerset 51-174 and Rolls. 16-17 are later accessions, including:

  • MSS. Ch. Somerset 86-163: title deeds for Kingston Seymour, 14th cent. (acquired with MSS. Ch. Northants. 38-48: New Summary Catalogue appendix II).
