Collection Info

As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised MSS. Ch. London and Middlesex 1-182 and MSS. Rolls London and Middlesex 1-24, of unrecorded provenance. Some items (Ch. 68, 76, 143-4, 162, 165, Rolls 2-4) can be identified in the collection of Richard Rawlinson. MS. Rolls London and Middlesex 18 was re-referenced as MS. Maps. Eng. a. 2.

MSS. Ch. London and Middlesex 183-640 and d. 1/1-9, with MSS. Rolls London and Middlesex 25-43, are later accessions from a variety of sources. Ch. 589-640 are 19th-century documents relating to St James Westminster and are not included in the present catalogue. MS. Rolls London and Middlesex 44 was re-referenced as MS. Eng. hist. c. 268 (R).
