BRADMERE. Convention between Samson, the abbot, and Geoffrey the clerk, of Mildenhall (Mildenhale), by which a messuage and certain lands lying in Bradmere are granted to the said Geoffrey. (c. 1190-1200.) Robert, prior, witness; died in 1200. [Partially obliterated.]

John de Bradmer grants to William his nephew, son of Adam Spyle and Batha(?), the grantor's sister, and , sister and to Edmund de Elwedon, chaplain, one messuage and certain lands in Mildenhall (Mildenhale), and rents in Barton Mills (Barton) and Herringswell (Herningewelle), to provide two chaplains to celebrate divine services for his soul and all the faithful, &c. in Mildenhall (Mildenhale), viz. the said William and Edmund, and after their deaths to trustees to appoint succession. (c. 1260-70.) [One of the trustees, Robert, prior of St. Eadmund, was prior from c. 1257 to 1280.]

⟨Bury St Edmunds (?).⟩ Alan and the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter without the gate of Risebi grant to the brethren of the hospital of St. Nicholas one rood of land which Adam de Hopetun gave to the said brethren, paying annually ½lb of cummin. Norman Treietarius of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) grants to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter in the suburb of St. Edmund, in frankalmoigne, 2d. of annual rent from an acre of arable land in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) lying towards Teyvenne. ⟨Bury St Edmunds (?).⟩ Adam, son of Hervey de Hopetun, grants to God, St. Mary and St. Peter, and the infirm brethren of St. Eudmund, viz. of the house of St. Peter, that land which Andrew the janitor of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) was accustomed to hold, except one rood which Adam gave to the brethren of St. Nicholas in frankalmoigne; also he gives to them ½lb of cummin which the brethren of St. Nicholas were accustomed to pay him. Convention made in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in full "portmaneiot", before Adam de Phalelham then provost, and others, by which Isabella, daughter of Walter Gochep, gave to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter, for five marks one acre of arable land opposite the hospital in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), in exchange for one acre of arable land with a meadow adjacent in the fields of the same vill, "extra portam del Su", viz. that which master Abbraham gave to the said brethren of St. Peter in frankalmoigne. ⟨Bury St Edmunds (?).⟩ Walter Tighethe, son of Robert de St. Eadmund, grants to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter, in frankalmoigne, an annual rent of 5½d., viz. from an acre of laud which Lemman 'ferrator' held of him 1½d., and from an acre which Richard Brun held 2d., and from William, son of Huttred, 2d. (c. 1210-20.) Witn. Adam de Falesham, provost of Bury St Edmunds (St. Eadmund), Wodart son of Elyas alderman etc.

⟨Bury St Edmunds (?)⟩ Richard de la Care, the prior, and brethren of the hospital of St. Nicholas without the east gate of St. Edmund, grant and quitclaim to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter all their right in a fourth part of one acre of arable land called 'Holdefader acre' lying at Dristnapes, which they had by the gift of Thomas de Canter of Bury St Edmunds (St. Eadmund); for this grant the said brethren of St. Peter gave 6s. of silver. Great Barton. Robert de Hese, for the soul of king John &c., grants to the church of St. Edmund, and to the abbot and monks there, in frankalmoigne, the whole of his land in Great Barton (Bertun) of the honor of Nottingham, namely that land which the said king John while he was earl of Moreton gave to him, for an annual service of one hawk, and to the said Robert and his heirs of one pound of cummin, (c. 1220-30.) Robert de Livermere, son of Hunfrid of St. Edmund, grants to the church of St. Edmund and the monks there, in frankalmoigne, all the tenements, with messuages &c., which Nicholas, son of Walter his uncle, held of him in the village of Fornham with 2s. annual rent; for which the said Nicholas had from the convent 12 marks, and the said Robert two marks. ⟨Rickinghall (?).⟩ Adam, rector of the church of Rickinghall (Richinghale), grants to St. Edmund and to sir Robert the Chamberlain of the same, sixpence of animal rents which Nicholas, son of Elias de Watlesfeud, gave to him. (c. 1220.)

Memorandum of the election of Richard de Lisle, abbot of Burton, to the abbacy of Bury St. Edmund, vacant by the resignation of Hugh de Northwold on his election to Ely. [Abbot 1229-1234.] [Printed by Hearne, in Chron. Dunstable, vol. II. p. 837, as a note to vol. I. p. 185.]

William Staniland acknowledges that he owes to the lord abbot of St. Edmund at his court of Redgrave annually the following customs and services, viz. in each week from the feast of Michaelmas to the gule of autumn, i. e. Aug. 1, one half day's work before dinner, finding his own food, and from the gule of autumn to Michaelmas day in each week two whole days' work and food from the lord, and two hens at Christmas and eggs at Easter and 4s. per annum, and for hidage 16d., and five seams of oats and seven teams at the ordering of the bailiffs of the abbot, and a fine for his daughters, and aid and tallage as his fellows, &c. (1235-1248.)

Thomas, son of John de Thweyt, grants to Henry, abbot of St. Edmund, the whole of his mill and three roods of land in Herewardestoft which he holds in the village of Wortham. For this donation the said abbot gave 40s. sterling. [Henry, abbot, 1234-48.]

Silvester de St. Edmund grants to the brethren of the hospital of St. Peter, in frankalmoigne, the whole of his toft in the village of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) which Walter Hodles sold him, making the service due for the same to the lords of the fee, viz. to the sacrist of St. Edmund 3s. and to the heirs of Umfrid, son of Richard 12d. (c. 1260-70.) Witn. Geoffrey the alderman, Richard de Mildenhale and Richard de Pulham, bailiffs.

Return of a jury in a dispute between the abbot and convent of St. Edmund and the prior and convent of Ely, concerning the right to the fishery of 'la Kyng leche,' in favour of the prior and convent of Ely; together with a fine levied at .... St. John the Baptist's day, 29 Hen. III (1245), by which the prior and convent of Ely remit and quit-claim all their right in the said fishery to the abbot and convent of St. Edmund. [Partially effaced.]

Ralph Banecroft of Rickinghall (Rykinghale) grants and quit-claims to Henry, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund one acre of arable land in Rickinghall (Rykinghale) in the field called Wyndhel. (1234-1248.)

⟨Rickinghall Superior.⟩ Geoffrey, son of Gilbert, son of Aylmer de Rykinghal , grants and quit-claims to Henry, the abbot of St. Edmund, the whole of the land under the wood of the said abbot called Swineffrith, which land is called 'Wodhangestoft,' for which the abbot gave him two marks. (1234-1248.)

Roger the Welshman, brother of Stephen the Welshman, grants to Henry, the abbot, and the convent of St. Edmund all the tenements he has in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) and Rickinghall (Rykinghale), and elsewhere of the fee of St. Eadmund. Dated at Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), 12 Kl. Oct, 21 Hen. III (20 Sept. 1237).

Robert Dewlond of Wortham (Wurtham) grants to Henry, the abbot, and convent of St. Edmund, one piece of land in the village of Wortham (Wurtham), for which the abbot gave him 5s. (1234-48.)

Robert, son of William Branche of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) , grants to Alexander the spicer, in marriage with Margaret his sister, a certain shop with a solar which is in the Cordwainers' Street in Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), and two acres of arable land, paying 9d. yearly to the hospital of St. Peter. (c. 1230-40.)

Margaret, relict of Alexander the spicerer of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) , quitclaims to the prior and brethren of the hospital of St. Peter for 8 marks all right in two acres of arable land in the fields of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund). (c. 1260-70.) Witn. Geoffrey Fitz-Robert, alderman, Jocey de Walpole and Richard de Pulman, bailiffs, etc.

Fornham St Martin. Geoffrey, son of Luke of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund) , grants for 18 marks to the hospital of St. Saviour nine acres of arable land in the fields of Scihtfornham [sic; endorsed: 'Suthfornham' and 'Sancti Martini'], paying annually for the same 9d. Thomas the goldsmith, of Bury St Edmunds (St. Edmund), sells and quit-claims to the hospital of St. Saviour for 3 marks the service &c. of William, son of Elric of the monastery, viz. 3s. from his fee in the field of Fornham, called Clipeshoghem, reckoned at 17 acres. HINDERCLAY, &c. Final concord at Cattishall (Cateshull) on the morrow of the Ascension of Our Lord, 35 Hen. III (1251), by which Osbert de Thorp and Margaret his wife demise to the abbot and church of St. Edmund 10s. of annual rent which she had as dowry from the abbot in Hinderclay (Hyldercle), Rickinghall (Rykinghale), and Wattisfield (Watlesfeld). For this concession the abbot gave to the said Osbert and Margaret five marks.
