ELSFIELD. Hugh, son of William de Helsefield , grants to the, church and canons of St. Frideswide in frankalmoigne, with the consent of Philip, his brother and heir, the whole of his land in Oxford near the church of St. Peter in the east, by the east gate of Oxford. Also he grants to them 4 acres of arable land of his lordship in Helsefeld, for the health of his soul, and in remission and redemption of his sins which he has contracted to this present, because of the short payment of tithes for the 2 acres in Longeforlang near the grange of the canons at Elsfeld and another two acres near the acre of Ralph Dispensator . Alan de Kyleworth of Oxon and Dionisia his wife grant to sir John de Wanere, clerk, parson of the church of Meryton , a certain messuage in Oxford, in the parish of St. Mary the Virgin, in Cattestrete. Dated at Oxford the Saturday next before the feast of St. Thomas the martyr, 10 Ed. III. Witn. Rich. Cary, mayor of Oxford , Walter de Faryndon and John de Brehulle , bailiffs.

OXFORD (St. Peter in the East). Simon, son of Henry de Lekamstede , grants and confirms to Randulph de Bruhull two messuages in Oxford, which lie under the walls of Oxford, in the parish of St. Peter in the east, formerly belonging to Henry his father, paying to him 1/2d., to the lords of the fee, viz. William de Chiltun 3s., and to the church of St. Peter in the east 6d., and John, son of Walter , 6d. Witnesses. Adam, son of Walter , and John Cursy , then bailiffs of Oxford. (c. 1241.) Richard, son of William le Spicer, of Oxford , grants to Nicholas Hosel of Lillingston [Lillingstone Dayrell or Lillingstone Lovell], and Alice, daughter of the late William de Hedingdon of Oxford , his wife, a messuage in Cattestrete in the parish of St. Peter in the east, between a tenement of John de Schipford on the south, and a tenement of the abbot and convent of Eynesham on the north. Witnesses. William de Burncestre, then mayor, Richard Cary and Gilbert de Grensted , then bailiffs of Oxford. Dated at Oxford the Tuesday next after the feast of the Annunciation B.M.V., 11 Ed. [II] (1318).

Nicholas Hosel of Lillingston [Lillingstone Dayrell or Lillingstone Lovell] and Alice his wife grant to John de Wildelond one messuage and a shop annexed in St. Peter in the east, in the street called Cattestret. Witnesses. John de Hampton, then mayor, John Culverd and Stephen de Adyndon , then bailiffs. Dated at Oxford the Sunday on the morrow of St. George, 16 Ed. [II] (1323).

John de Wildelond, clerk, grants to John de Bybury one messuage in Oxon in the street called Cattestret in the parish of St. Peter in the east. Witnesses. William de Burcestre, then mayor, Stephen de Adyntone and Symon de Gloucestre , then bailiffs of Oxford. Dated at Oxford the Sunday on the feast of the invention of the Holy Cross, 6 Ed. III.

Memorandum of the bequest or gift of sir Roger de Marton of three messuages, 16 shops, 2 solars, 1 celar, and 5 acres 3 roods of meadow, to the abbot and convent of Oseney, in the parishes of St. Peter in the east, All Saints, St. Martin, and St. Michael's north, with particulars of the same. (c. 1350).

Oxford, St. Martin’s Memorandum, in English, of an agreement made 24 September 1 Ric. III. at Oxford in the presence of William Waynflete, bp. of Winchester, between St. F. and Magdalen College. The Priory is to pay (i) 2/2 rent for a messuage and curtilage lying by the East gate by the Priory gate, (ii) 2/- rent for a ‘way’ towards the ground of St. F. (iii) 2/- rent for a stair between two shops in St. Martin’s parish, (iv) 2/- for repairs to a tenement of the prior ‘beside the Carfax, the College having lost 10 years’ profit from it. (v) 8/8 rent for a house by the town wall in the parish of St. Ebbe. The College is to pay (i) 5/8 rent for a house called Swynebrok, late Thomas Hall’s house in the parish of Allhallows. (ii) 5/8 for a hall called Yng Hall in St. Mary’s parish. (iii) 3/5 for a house in the parish of St. Michael in the south. (iv) 8/8 for a house on the north side of the church in the parish of Allhallows. (v) 3/4 for a house by a way leading from the high road to a grange of the priory. (vi) 76/8 for the price of timber cut and carried off thence by the College. (vii) (sum not stated) for timber, faggots, stones, and lime, witheld by the College from the first foundation unto this time. An exchange was made for a house in St. Ebbe’s against the west side of the churchyard on the north side of the street leading to Frideswide Hall, for a piece of land in St. John’s at the east end of Crope lane. The College are to have a house belonging to the Priory above the College tenement on the north side of Carfax, for which the Priory are to have the whole fishing in the Cherwell from the East bridge to the King’s Mill, leaving to the College their right of free passage. The College are to see that no trees overhang on their side that might hinder river traffic or fishing. The priory hold a house and garden in St. Ebbe’s by exchange for a garden in Cat Street, which Lucy Glover (and now John Asshendon Glover) held, and for a little garden that Richard Leke holds. This indenture is not to be prejudicial to the priory’s right to a quit-rent from a house called ‘Feyre Yeomannys Housse’ in St. Mary Magdalen’s. The College have returned the day of the delivery of this indenture a bond of £40 in which the Priory was bound to them. 24 Sept. ⟨1483.⟩

Oxford, St. Peter-in-the-East Robert Distaff grants to Ralph son of Nigel a house between the land of Simon son of John and that of Nicholas Wistel. Oxford, St. Peter-in-the-East Adam of Cirencester, chaplain, grants the same to St. F., on condition of service being performed for him on his anniversary, as for a professed Canon. Oxford.. Christina Pille, widow, grants to Robert de Brackele and Agnes his wife (the grantor’s daughter) for their service, a messuage and 6 cottages with two butts and two acres of arable land. The messuage lies between the prior of St. F⟨rideswide⟩ ’s land and the land late of Robert le Chapeler , in St. Peter’s-in-the-East, without the East Gate. The cottages and butts are in St. Clements’ beyond the Petit Pont, between the land of Walter le teler and that of Henry le tannur . One acre of land lies between the preceptor of Couele’s land and that of the Abbot of Oseney. The other acre, called Havedlond, lies between the prior of St. F.’s land and the bank called Charewelle. Rent: 30/- during the grantor’s life, or else a house for her to live in, worth 30/- (yearly): after her death a clove gillyflower to her heirs, at Easter.
