RAKEDALE (Leicestershire). Inrolment of pleadings in a suit tried Trinity term, 2 Henry V, by which the prior and convent of Canwell recover from sir Ralph Shirley, kt., their right of presentation to the church of Rakedale.

DUNTON BASSET (Leicestershire). Indenture made 10 April, 7 Hen. VII, by which sir Hugh Lymstere, the prior of Canewell, and convent of the same, demise to Thomas Tailor of Dunston Basset a cottage in Dunton and half a virgate of land for 51 years, at an annual rent of 8s.

BEREFORD, &c. Letters patent of King Edward III, dated at Westminster 6 Feb., 29 of his reign (1355), making known, that, by an inspection of the rolls of Chancery it appears that with the assent of Bartholomew de Burgherssh and Elizabeth his second wife, of Mark Husee and Margery his third wife, and Isabella who was the wife of Henry de Ferrars , the fourth of the daughters and heirs of Theobald de Verdon , deceased, who held of the King Edw. II in capite of the fees and parts of knights' fees and the advowsons of churches which were the said Theobald's have been assigned to Thomas, son and heir of Joan , who was the wife of Thomas de Furnivall , the eldest of the daughters and heirs of the said Theobald, according to the law and custom of England, the underwritten fees and advowsons, viz. in demesne four knights' fees in Potteleye, Cheynestre, Strote, Twyldenhyde, Est H(?)eche, and Walnesthorp, which Richard Comyn and the heirs of William Comyn had, the fourth part of one knight's fee in Aleton which Robert Brown holds, the half of one knight's fee in Mousleye, which the heirs of Richard Faype holds, the half of one knight's fee in Webbeton, Cobbewell, Walshopthorn, and Meere, which Roger and George Crikentot hold, the half of one knight's fee in Rouleston, which pertains to the castle of Ewyas in Herefordshire, one knight's fee in Hopton Caudinant in co. Salop, which John de Hopton holds the half of one knight's fee in Neuhall, co. Derby, which the heirs of Robert de la War... holds, one knight's fee in Northbur, co. Stafford, which Ralph de Botiler holds the half of one knight's fee in Bereford, co. Warwick, which John de Napfold holds, the half of one knight's fee in Lullyngton in the same county, which the heir of Peter de Walwardyngton holds, and the reversion of two knights' fees, the half of a knight's fee and a fourth part in Pyonia and Houton Cotes in co. Hereford, which Richard de la Lynde, jun., Philip Aphowel and Rees Aphowel hold, one knight's fee in Thurlaston, co. Warwick, which Simon fitz Margery and John Darset hold, a fourth part in Morton, the half of one knight's fee in Hopton and Alverton, co. Warwick, which the free tenants there hold to have the same after the death of Elizabeth de Burgh , who holds the same in dowry after the death of the aforesaid Theobald formerly her husband, together with the advowson of the church of Neubold and the third presentation to the church of Boseworth, co. Leicester, the advowson of moiety of the priory of Lantony in Wales, and the reversion of the advowson of Farnham, co. Bucks.

John Neel grants to D⟨aventry⟩ in free-alms 1½ acres of land in D⟨aventry⟩ , lying over Fischwerehul between the prior’s land and the Daventry-Norton road. In exchange they have given him a croft called Millewardis croft in D⟨aventry⟩ by the Walton road on the west. They also release to him their right in 5 strips at the head of D⟨aventry⟩ towards Drayton, by the high road to Leicester on the north. • (i) The archdeacon of Leicester to the abbot of St. James’, Northampton, acknowledging the receipt of a writ (dated 7 March, 1320), ordering him to cite Thomas de Wolwardington, rector of L⟨ubenahm⟩ , on the fifth court-day after the Sunday on which is sung ‘Jubilate’ [27 April.] to appear at St. Sepulchre’s, Northampton, to answer to D⟨aventry⟩ . Given at Leicester. 5 April 1320.
• (ii) The dean of Gertr’ [Gartree] to the same, acknowledging a similar writ (dated 6 Oct. 1322): day of appearance to be the third court-day after November 2. Given at Bidlisdone [Billesdon] 30 Oct. 1322.
• (iii) The same to the same acknowledging a similar writ (dated 5 Dec. 1322): day of appearance to be the next court-day after March 12. Given at Foxton, 26 Feb. 1323.
• (iv) The same to the same: citation for fourth court-day after November 30 (writ dated ‘5 Non. Nov.’ 1322). Given at Billesdon, 24 Nov. 1322.
• (v) The same to the same: citation for the court-day after the Sunday on which is sung ‘quasi modo geniti’ [3 April.] (writ dated 14 March 1323). Given at Billisdone, 22 March 1323.
• (vi) The same to the same: citation for the third court-day after May 22 (writ dated 6 April 1323). Given at B⟨illisdone⟩ . […] 1323.

Lubenham [Leics.]. One membrane containing three fourteenth-century transcripts: ⟨28 May.⟩ 1323.

• (i) The official of the Court of Canterbury orders the dean of Gertr’ to cite Th. de W., in a cause with D⟨aventry⟩ , concerning all the tithes of the fee of Hugh Poer in L⟨ubenham⟩, to appear on the next court-day after 24 June, in St. Mary’s, Aldermarichurch, London. Given at Keselingbury.
• (ii) Royal writ to the official of Canterbury prohibiting the Courts Christian from hearing the case until an assize Utrum had determined whether a fourth part of the advowson belonged to the King or the monks. Given at Cowyk. [Yorks.]. 10 June ⟨1323.⟩

On that day D⟨aventry⟩ produced 4 witnesses: brother Peter de Horpole , Henry de Kibbeworth, chaplain, Walter Selle of D⟨aventry⟩ , and Robert Coke of Preston . Accused produced none. Adjournment till Tuesday after the Sunday on which is sung ‘Misericordia domini’ [13 April], in St. Margaret’s, Leicester, and then to the court-day after 3 May, in All Saints.

Thrupp. Inspeximus and confirmation of the following documents by John, Bishop of Lincoln . 14 March 1311.

• (i) Richard, bishop of Lincoln grants the churches of Scaldeford, Bissebrok, and Southrop to D⟨aventry⟩ (The amount they paid for it is not legible.) Given at Bukkedene, 27 November 1266.
• (ii) Letters of the dean and chapter confirming (1). Given at Lincoln 21 April 1267.
• (iii) Letter of the bishop to the archdeacon of Northampton to give D⟨aventry⟩ corporal possession of the Church. Given at Leicester. 31 March 1286. (The Inspeximus tells us that this was on the death of Robert le Paumer, rector of Throp ). D⟨aventry⟩ instituted as their vicar, John of Daventry, chaplain: it was then found that the tithes were worth (1) of grain 15 marks a year (2) of hay from demesne meadows 8/- (3) of hay from other meadows, (4) of 2 virgates 2 acres pertaining to the Church, with pasture 32/-, (5) All other tithes 3½ marks. The monks are to bear two-thirds of all burdens on the Church, and the vicar one-third.
• (iv) Letters patent of Oliver, bishop of Lincoln to the archdeacon of Northampton to put John of D⟨aventry⟩ in possession. Given at Theyden. 4 May 1286.
• (v) Letters patent of the same (the same date) saying that at the instance of the monks he has written [as in (iv)] to the archdeacon. Given at Storne Park [Lincs.].

Welton. In a case heard before the bishop of Lincoln’s official in the church of All Saints, Northampton, between D⟨aventry⟩ (actor) by master Roger de Bendone their proctor, and John Mallory, lord of Weltone , Symon Tuwe of the same, Robert Ace , Richard le Heir , Robert de Dunstone , Richard Martin , Richard the marshal , Henry son of Wille (sic) of the same (accused) by William de Baddeby, clerk, their proctor, by reason of burials in the chapel of Welton. Previous hearing by bishop of Lincoln at Bostone Stayers. Case postponed to [4 July] in S. Margaret’s, Leicester. ⟨7 June⟩ 1291.
