As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised MSS. Ch. Notts. 1-16 and MS. Rolls Notts. 1. Provenance was not recorded but Ch. 9 belonged to Ralph Thoresby and the charters relating to the hospital of St John of Jerusalem may be those mentioned by Thoresby (Ducatus Leodensis, p. 600) as having been "collected by an aged Minister in the East-Riding" and given to Thoresby by "Mr. Jubb of York". Ch. 17-59 and Rolls. 2-3 are later accessions from a range of sources.
