A parchment book (bound in 1929), folios 1–11d., about 10½″ × 13″. f. 1. ‘Missus Gabriel de coelis’= Chevalier, Repertorium Hymnologicum no. 11636, which see for references to printed editions. This prose or sequence in honour of the Virgin Mary was in common use from the end of the twelfth century. f. 1. d. A rental of the lands assigned to the Chapel of S. Mary, between 1250–1288. It is here given in full because it provides a terminus ante quem for dating grants of land to the Chapel. ‘Memorandum quod anno domini 1250 in vigilia s. Daventry, The Mills. Peter, prior, &c.; of D⟨aventry⟩ grant to John son of Roger Miller of D⟨aventry⟩ for his service, 2 acres of arable land in D⟨aventry⟩ and Drayton viz. in the south field of D⟨aventry⟩ 3 half acres lying at le Loch by the land of Simon de aula . In the south field of Drayton a half acre over Putforlong between the monks’ land and that of William of Drayton . Rent 2d. For this grant John gave the prior; &c., an acre of arable land ‘cum divisa eidem adiacente’ in the south field of Drayton over Ryenhul by the land of John Neel , on which acre Ryenhulmylne was situated, which acre and mill Roger, father of the said John, used to hold from the monks. Witnesses: John fitz-Philip of D⟨aventry⟩ , William of Draytone of the same, Symon de aula of the same, Robert Gemme of Drayton , Robert le Werrour of the same, Geoffrey Gamel of the same. Thrupp. Inspeximus and confirmation of the following documents by John, Bishop of Lincoln . 14 March 1311.
- (i) Richard, bishop of Lincoln grants the churches of Scaldeford, Bissebrok, and Southrop to D⟨aventry⟩ (The amount they paid for it is not legible.) Given at Bukkedene, 27 November 1266.
- (ii) Letters of the dean and chapter confirming (1). Given at Lincoln 21 April 1267.
- (iii) Letter of the bishop to the archdeacon of Northampton to give D⟨aventry⟩ corporal possession of the Church. Given at Leicester. 31 March 1286. (The Inspeximus tells us that this was on the death of Robert le Paumer, rector of Throp ). D⟨aventry⟩ instituted as their vicar, John of Daventry, chaplain: it was then found that the tithes were worth (1) of grain 15 marks a year (2) of hay from demesne meadows 8/- (3) of hay from other meadows, (4) of 2 virgates 2 acres pertaining to the Church, with pasture 32/-, (5) All other tithes 3½ marks. The monks are to bear two-thirds of all burdens on the Church, and the vicar one-third.
- (iv) Letters patent of Oliver, bishop of Lincoln to the archdeacon of Northampton to put John of D⟨aventry⟩ in possession. Given at Theyden. 4 May 1286.
- (v) Letters patent of the same (the same date) saying that at the instance of the monks he has written [as in (iv)] to the archdeacon. Given at Storne Park [Lincs.].
