As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.

The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised MSS. Ch. Suffolk 1-1474 and MSS. Rolls Suffok 1-37. Turner and Coxe made no attempt to distinguish the sources of the collection, of which the most important were (1) material collected by Thomas Tanner, 1674–1735, and bequeathed by him to the Bodleian (2) material collected by Thomas Martin of Palgrave (1697–1771), subsequently acquired by Richard Gough (1735-1809) and bequeathed by him to the Bodleian. Further research is needed to distinguish the provenance of individual items.

MSS. Ch. Suffolk 1475-1583 and MS. Rolls Suffolk 38 are later accessions from various sources, of which the most substantial (Ch. 1475-1546) consists of items presented in 1889 by the executrix of Prof. H. W. Chandler (Summary Catalogue V.904).

Fine and recovery by which John Frere conveys to Clemeneia of Londham a messuage, 32 acres of land and 3.5 acres of meadow with appurtenances, in Aldeburgh and Haselwode, to be held by the said John of the said Clemeneia, for life, and after the death of the said John to revert to the said Clemeneia and her heirs, rendering yearly a rose on St John the Baptists day. Bury St Edmunds. 1398. Pope Boniface IX, indult at the petition of King Richard II and the abbot and convent of Bury St Edmunds, to elect their own abbot and administer the monastery without other confirmation as if their abbot had been elected in the customary manner, etc. (This to avoid the perils and expenses of the journey to Rome). Seal lost.

Thetford. 1363. Alice, wife of late William le Warner of Thetford (Thefford) and executrix of his will grants to William Pyper of Tettyngton a messuage in Thefford which was William Godman of Ixworth (Ixworthe)'s, lying between the messuages of formerly of John Pyk' and Sir John de Furneyx, knight, abutting on the highway called Gresmarket leading to the market of Thefford ('Regalem viam ducentem dil[sic] Gresmarket versus forum Thefford') and a lane called Pykeslane for a certain sum of money. Witnesses: John Davy, mayor of Thetford (Thefford), John Cha' coronatinus, Simon de Grenndesbourg, William Lester, William Hardyng, John Sherberd, William Russhel. Seal is missing.

Surrender by Alice, wife of late John Raulyn jun., without the court according to the custom of the manor, through teh hands of Thomas Merly, father of the said tenant and in the presence of Robert Fynch, villein tenant, to the lord and others of the homage, of 3 roods of land held by villein tenure called Stonylond of the holding of Folkes, with appurtenances in Snapes, and admission of Margaret Folkes. Geoffrey, parson of Weston, and Henry Cartewaner of Needham Market grants to Simon de Burley, Nicholas Dagworthe, kt., John Rodynge and John Paykyrke of Badley, all the land and tenements of Geoffrey and Henry in the town and fields of Badley, held by gift of Simon Vincent of Badley, except a certain tenement called Grettefordes, to hold of the chief lord of the fee for the usual dues. Long roll, of 13 membranes, containing articles, interrogatories, depositions, &c. taken before delegates in the diocese of Norwich relating to a dispute between the parishioners of Fundenhall (Fundenhall, Norfolk), and Margaret Hovel the prioress and convent of Flixton, concerning the repairs of Fundenhall church, Dec. and Jan. A.D. 1376-77; forming only a portion of the complete record, a reading is prefixed by Tho. Martin, and there is also an endorsement in the land writing of P. La Neve.
