As with other series shelfmarked MS. Ch. and MS. Rolls, this is an artificial collection created from a range of archival sources, and the provenance of individual items is not always known.
The collection catalogued in 1878 comprised only MSS. Rolls Eng. 1-4 (formerly shelmarked Rolls Appendix 1-4 or Rolls Misc. 1-4), of unknown provenance.
The main later accession is MSS. Ch. Eng. 19-53, a collection of royal documents (mostly wardrobe bills temp. Henry VI) purchased at Sotheby's, 26 June 1975. These were formerly bound with MS. Ch. Suffolk 1579 and MS. Eng. hist. c. 775 in a collection owned and perhaps assembled by the Norfolk antiquarian Thomas Martin; the collection passed to Craven Ord (lot. 1014 in his sale, 25 Jan. 1830) and to Thomas Phillipps (his MS. 4103).
